Gents, please lets remain respectful of each other. I asked the question because I'm not familiar or knowledgable of the subject. I respect the differences in opinions but please remember, we can disagree without being disagreable with towards each other.
And by the way, Southwest it was pretty cold early this morning but warmed up really well. I'm really exhausted right now but my adrenaline is still pumping really hard.
Gents, it's a real mother doing Blue Ridge and Rt. 80 on a bike with a raked triple tree--you gotta take it, really sloooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww....

Strange, I have ridden up the Tioga pass into Yosemite with the wife on the back a couple of times and really did not feel any power loss at all.
Mark I agree with you I have made that same trip with a few friends some on HD's and my bike seems to run just as great up there as in the valley but can't say the same for the HD's( not )

They must have something wrong with their bikes then.
I wonder how Kawasaki's, Honda's, Suzuki's BMW's, etc. would do under similar circumstances? Oh that's right, we never compare to them....only Harley's. Some of you guys are too much.

Thin air, less oxygen= more fuel needed.
WRONG!!! To have the mixture remain the same, less air means less fuel! A carb does not automatically compensate for air density therefore the mixture is rich at high altitude. Even if the mixture remained the same (an advantage of fuel injection) the power available at high altitude won't be what it is at low altitude; that is one of the reasons for supercharging.
Clifford Clifford the CV carb on the Roadie does compensate for altitude... I am not going to try and explain the principal of a venturi style Cv carb to you guys.. But I know for a fact that they will run leaner at altitude.. I know a lot of you don't have the experience or the knowledge of the effects of altitude on a normally aspirated internal combustion engine. Or the difference in the type of Carbs.. So I won't get all technical on you... But the Mikuni on your bike is not like the ole carbs on the older vehicles. It is a different animal... The Mixture is not richer at altitude on your Roadstar,It is leaner, unless you are running an after market flatside carb. I speak from years, and I mean Years. of flying pushrod aircooled normally aspirated and Blown carburated aircraft engines.. and over 45 years of riding all different kinds of bikes.. So don't even try to convince me other wise because I just find it comical....
Butch
As Clifford said, the carb does not automatically adjust. That's why the manufacturers make carbs so easy to adjust. Since it doesn't adjust, you have less oxygen, but the carb continues to push the same amount of fuel. With a lower air to fuel ratio, you get the dreaded 3% per 1k ft power loss. To test this theory, next time you ride to the mountains, wash your bike when you get home. Dip your finger in the soapy water, and then touch the inside of your exhaust(not after just running it, let it cool). It will be black from the excess fuel burn in your exhaust. And that is caused by the lean mixture. Why do mommy and daddy have to fight? Can't we all just get along and sing Kumbaya? Everybody join hands now.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive, well-preserved body; rather you should skid in sideways, cold pizza in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly trashed, totally worn out, screaming, Yeehaw.\\\\\\

About 3 years ago I rode up to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
It was 70 and calm at the bottom of the mt. and 34 with 32mph winds at the top.
At the top where a couple of HD's and a couple of BMW's. My buddy was on a Warrior and his son on a Suzuki crotch rocket.
The only bikes that had problems starting at the top where the BMW's
I think they may have been the exception and not the rule though.

Sorry I forgot the law of physics does not apply to Roadstars.. Not to get into any kind of pissing contest, all I was saying is my bike seemed to run as well at 10 thousand feet as it does at sea level.
