Broken lifter and damaged cam 8 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
Ok, got the report from the shop today that was doing my recall. The bike has a broken lifter and that damaged the cam. He said $1300 to repair, $1000 of that being parts. It seems a wee bit high to me, but that's what they say. My first thought, pull the tank, pull the head, replace the lifter and cam. Any suggestions of a source other than my local dealer? Should I expect to pay this much? I'm technically minded but no master mechanic mind you.
He said it was running on the rear cylinder only, which sort of went in my theory of a plug being fowled. I've built car engines before no problem. New cams? easy. lifters? not a biggy. The bike just seems like less parts and easier to get to.
Any holes in my theory? Anyone have a front cam and lifter for sale? Am I out of my mind?
Thanks.
Justin

I might also ask, is it single over head cam, or is there an intake cam and exhaust cam?

The Roadstars are pushrod V-Twins. No overhead cam, it's down below.

If they have it opened for the recall the most you should have to pay for is the parts, no labor since it's already torn down, and the parts pricing seems a little steep to me.

Since it is in for recall, I think that is all broken down already, so where do they come up with additional labor. If you go to Yamahasportsplaza.com cam assembly is 290.00 (2 cams) the lifters come out to a bit less than 200.00. I'd like to know where they come up with a grand worth of parts. What are they gonna do, charge you for parts that are required in the tranny recall too? and by the way, you can use lifters from a jeep think it's HT2011, from my understanding like 6 bucks a piece.

Holy crap that's awesome. I just priced cam assembly from another local dealer at $425 and $125 for the lifter. If I can use a jeep lifter (part of me on the inside will die putting a jeep part in my bike...) and pick up the assembly for $290, that's like a good saturday's worth of work!
I found this on replacing cams:

I was unable to find similar article on lifter, is there an exploded engine view somewhere? If I can see it, generally I can get to it, and replace it.
You guys are indeed awesome!

Go to 30% off Yamaha Parts and plug in YAMAHA, MOTORCYCLE, YEAR, and MODEL motorcycle.
When the OEM parts listing comes up, it will show "Camshft Chain."
Click on the pic to enlarge and look up the # of the cams. It is number 5 on the list. (See below for one cam)
SKU: 4WM-W1211-02-00 CAM SHAFT ASSY $290 each
