They said it was illegal to alter the exhaust in any way, and that legit shops won't do it. Is that right, and will it void the 5 year warranty I just bought?

This is how it was explained to me: Changing a part or modifying a part does not void your warranty unless that part caused the failure. Example: if you put in 100w lights in everything and your wiring melts, that most likely will not be covered. Change those same lights and your floorboard breaks off, covered. Most dealer shops I have found will not mod stock exhaust, but it is up to them. They would rather sell you an expensive aftermarket unit. What I would do is find and install the exhaust of your choice and put the stockers in the garage attic. If you put a hole in a piston (not gonna happen), throw back on the stack exhaust and haul her down for warranty repairs.
BTW, welcome to the Clinic!!

I bought my '07 the same way, a brand new leftover. Fortunately for me, I'm well past that stage of mods. I use my R* as a daily commuter and it is a bullet-proof design. Waiting for someone to answer about PA and mods. Here in calif they just passed something like that but it doesn't go into effect for a while and older bikes aren't included. BOL. There is a ton of good info here to be found.

THanks for all the welcoming comments. I am now looking into saddlebags and wonder with a stock exhaust setup if there is a limit to the dimensions of the bike. I tried to find info, but since exhaust style has alot to do with the size you can fit, I can not find a definitive answer. Thanks guys, and if anyone in in SW PA, drop me a line. Cool place...

Yinz,
Hi from Prospect, pa! I'm new to the forum too. Where are you from in the Burgh? I've never heard of after market exhausts being illegal. My bike passes inspection with pipes and an air intake. A buddy of mine called to have pipes put on and have them rejet the bike. They said they would do the pipes but rejetting was illegal. I can't imagine anyone taking the time to actually check. I ended up talking him into doing it, its not difficult. Anyway just about every bike you see has aftermarket pipes so I really cant believe they're illegal...and jetting is only necessary if you're putting on an air intake...IMO I think most would agree.
I have saddlebags with brackets for sale, if you're interested leave me your email Ill send you some pics.

Welcome to the clinic.
Well if you are loooking for accesories head to m&m Leather in greensburg about the best price you will get on exhaust bags and windshield clothes etc at a shop local.
For what it's worth I had drilled my 650 exhaust and passed inspection at several different places through out the 7 years I had it. I also removed the AIS completely and never raised a question as far as that is concerned. Right now motorcycles do not need emision inspections so I think that the exhaust is fair game in pa also I would believe if you want the correct answer it would depend on what county you live also.
I bought my 07 this spring at lojacks Yamaha. He also had 2 08's can't go wrong buying a brand new bike at half the list unless you are looking at resale value then you are screwed. I live just outside of Harmarville in Indiana township where are you from.

I'm in South Park, about 20 mins south of the city. I have very little confidence in myself to do the stock exhaust mods, so if anyone has any experience, please let me know. Brandon, a PM is on the way for bags and brackets.
