Clutch questions 4 Years, 2 Months ago
Hey guys well it looks like my stock clutch is starting to slip. it has been slipping but its getting worse.
so I ordered a new gasket and a stock clutch. my bike has already had the oil pump gear upgrade so im good there.
I just ordered the clutch plates as I was going to take the metal plates and run some sand paper over them to roughen them up.
then only thing im in need of is the clutch tool so if anyone has one and would like to either sell or I could pay you to borrow it temporarily would be much appreciated.
I plan to change the clutch in 2 weeks as I graduate the police academy in 2 weeks and I ride my bike everywhere.
otherwise I have done a clutch on a vstar and it is super easy

Are you sure it's just not a week spring ? The clutch plates rarely go out I use the speed star spring on my 110 big bore and I have no slippage

I had a 650 vstar and they are known for a weak clutch. The fix often was the same in the vstar forum as I read here...try the stronger clutch springs.

Or the Barnett replacement for the stock spring. Erb ran about 160k on the original plates, using a double stacked spring set up. He only changed the plates when he did , because he was in there already to change the throw out bearing. He said the plates were still within tolerances.

I had 58,000 on my plates with them slipping badly. Bought the Barnett SR-2 and have not had a problem since. Took a mic and measured the disks and they were within factory specs. Your wasting your money on clutch plates. And there is no special tool needed, just a gasket & either the spring Ultrastar mentioned or the SR-2.

I'd say don't sand the plates. The clutches will hold if good on smooth, even shiny plates with sufficient pressure (clamp force). It's not the roughness that holds or keeps from slipping or spinning. Chances are you will ruin the clutch material with a 'rough plate' surface.

I highly recommend only upgrading the clutch spring and not the plates. Mine started to slip aroun 60,000 miles. Installed the Barnett's upgrade (kept the same clutch plates) and "bang", like a new clutch. I've got over 10,000 on it and runs like new still.

Yep, Barnett upgrade. Gasket. About an hour. New oil and go.

+1 on don't sand the metal plates. They're supposed to be smooth. The clutch material isn't made to handle a rough surface and would be gone in no time. It's probably just a weak spring.

Edit: If you replace the disks pay particular attention to the notches. They only go back one way - it's very specific in the shop manual.

Weak spring is the culprit, so measure the disks and if in spec. keep em in. Or if you already got the new ones put em in and save the old for spares. Also the SR-2 is the answer for long clutch life and smooth engagement.

guys I really appreciate all of the responses!
I will measure the plates. I canceled the order for the clutch disks and was able to get a refund as I ordered them last night.

I do have the gasket on the way!

The tool I was referring to was the clutch tool to hold the clutch while TQing the bolts
