Harley hand controls Brake question!! 2 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
For the past few months I have been gathering parts, and slowly building a special project.
now I a stumped!!
I WANT to run the Harley control's or should I say I will run them but this is my issue.
I know I need a Harley master cylinder set up for dual disks. I am going to run 1700 4 piston calibers.
can the gurus recommend the correct size?
1996-2012 FXST, FSD, XL, 11/16” Dual Disc
2008-2011 FLT, 15mm, Dual Disc
1996-2007 FLT, 11/16” Dual Disc w/Radio
2008-2012 FLT, 15mm Dual Disc w/Radio
These are the sizes for the master cylinder and year that I have came across. I plan to have a braided line made to adapt the master cylinder to the diverter.
thanks guys

The master cylinder that came on your Roastar with duel disc brakes is the size of master cylinder that you will need.
I believe the size of the stock Roadstar Master cylinder is stamped into the master cylinder
of the roadster right below the fluid level glass window.
Check that out.
11/16 for Harley is for duel front brakes.
5/8 for single disc brake.
If you use too large of a master cylinder the brakes will come on too hard and fast.
If you use a smaller master the brakes will feel more gradual and less grabby.
Metrics come in 13mm,17mmm.

I believe the stock master cylinder is 14mm. I might try the 15mm Harley brake master for the front.

I'm using the 96-07 Harley controls. I'm running a rotor off a sportster along with an R6 caliper. I'm running single disk. The front master while being made for dual disk doesn't seem grabby but feels like I barely need to pull the brake and that's due to pressure. My front brake does not stop as well as a dual disk. But it stops the bike. As for your front brake line the stock R* line fits the Harley master. Any 14mm fits both

I am wondering if I can find a reducer and go from 15mm to 14mm at the tee under the triple tree?
I ordered the hand controls and the bars. so now all I need to do is order the brake master cylinder, clutch lever, a clutch cable, and then Harley throttle cables as im running a hsr42 carb.

I think you could use the 11/16 bore harley and be OK for the dual front brakes and 5/8 bore for the rear brakes.I had harley 11/16 bore front brakes on my warrior and they were OK, had to pull the brake lever a little harder than stock, but had no trouble stopping. I had forward controls on my warrior that had 3/4 bore and i almost had no brakes at the rear due to having to press so hard to apply the brakes. I put the stock rear brakes back on, much better. I am planning to install harley 5/8 bore forward controls for the rear brakes as soon as i get some aluminum plate to make an adapter to mount them. Good luck getting your harley control mod completed.

11/16 is 17.4mm
And the roadstar front master is 14 mm
I only plan to run the front master cylinder.
I found that the 08-12 harley flt is a 15mm master cylinder and is set up for dual disks. I believe this is the best and safest bet enlarging from 14mm to 15mm and can obtain the stock feel.

I went back and read your OP and see you were talking about stock harley front controls. I was referring to custom controls and have not found a 15mm bore brake side. My bad.
