Rich in rear cylinder 4 Years, 10 Months ago
I have had a little popping in one of the cylinders so I decided to pull the plugs and find out what was going on. The front cylinder was tan just like it should be, but the back one was almost fouled out, looked to be running rather rich. I am thinking about the only thing that can cause this is a vacuum leak somewhere. It has a stock carb on it, also I believe the Ignition system is stock. Anything else I should look for?

Not trying to be an ass, but if you are going to ask a technical question, it helps if all the pertinient information is available to begin with. If you fill out your profile completely, we would know what year, jetting, intake, and exhaust you are working with and might be able to help.

And BTW,

That is a question that has been here on the site for since I can remember.......and I haven't heard an answer to it to this day...........Most have theorized that it runs hotter........... If anyone figures it out......well post it.............

My Shadow was split/jetted, supposedly because the front cylinder runs cooler than the back. Don't make a ton of sense in a single carb air cooled bike, but other factors could be at work if you are getting popping. I'm going to venture a guess that the popping is the back cylinder.

As a matter of fact I believe it is. The popping is mild, and even milder after a good long ride. As far as jetting goes...have no idea. Pipes are V&H. it is an 05 1700 R*. Since you know where...why?

Check your exhaust flanges to see if they are warped any. There's an article on the home page that addresses it. Some of the after market exhaust flanges can warp if they are tightened to the stock specs. My speedstar pipes did it. Like to never have gotten them off. worth checking.

I have owned for about a month. So I am learning about it as fast as I can. I admit I am not up too speed on the yamaha v twin. I have actually listened to some of the posts where they have recorded the sound and some bikes sound very similar to mine, others do not. The pipe flanges look ok, I actually looked at that after I read the article.

I've had the same problem.... The rear cylinder doesn't heat up as quickly as the front one. I let it warm up for a couple minutes and I can still put my hand on the fins of the jug and its cold.... Pulled my plugs after I limped home on one cylinder after work. Fronts ok, back completed cardoned up!

Sort of taking off the air intake and doing the SVS fix (spraying it down with seafoam) I think the problem is coming back.... JD, it's a 2005, stock everything...

Just an FYI, popping is an indicator of a lean condition, not rich. Also, a vac leak will cause a lean condition, not a rich condition.

And,

We'll get you figured out sooner or later
