Got it fixed...I put my Fluke on the old sender and it showed as an open circuit, no matter where you moved the float. Replaced the sender... still no register. It was he same if I unplugged the sender... so... I found an old variable resistor... inserted the terminals inot the senders plug and put my Fluke on the other end near the guage . ( I used the continuity test to find the two terminals on the big plug. When I tweeked the variable resistor it changed as it should. I went back to the old sender and it still checked open as it did in the begenning. everything points to a bad sender unit. finally I placed the half full tank back opn the bike and re connected the plugs and everyting worked. I know I had a bad sender unit and the reason it didnot work when I rekplacedit was a bad connectionon the big plub. It is very hard to clean the connectors and from doing this kind of work for the last 25 years I know better than to just spray any type of cleaner into the plastic. Qnyway... all seems fine now... will keep the RSC posted.
PS.... the sender unit was costly but a very worthwile piece. I was everyting including the float and variable resistor unit complete. I was impressed...

I've had problems with my sending unit from time to time and have rebuilt it twice as a result. Today I actually had to take the console apart and open the gauge and tap the fuel gauge arm as it was stuck in the full position. It's working again. Fourth time in as many years that I have had to mess with it.
