Need Some Carb Help.. 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Well when I went pump less I've been chasing fuel mileage. SKWEARpeg suggested that I stay with a 170 main jet and 37.5 Pilot jet with the clip set on the 4th groove with one washer on it. My fuel mileage was 29mpg. So I went with Curts recommendations as everything the same with the only the only exception was to put the 35 pilot jet back in and a 172.5 main jet. Fuel Mileage was still 29mpg. I used to get almost 40mpg. I spoke with DaveJ today and he suggested putting back in the 170 main jet and 37.5 pilot jet with one washer under the fourth groove and no washer under the plastic spacer. He seems to think that it's my float settings that is the culprit. I need to know if these float setting look right??

What do you guys think as I'm at a loss here and I've got it apart and I'm sick of tearing it down.

Watching. I understand the jet settings but how the float works is nothing short of magic to me.

I currently put the 170 main in with the a 37.5 main jet one washer under the 4th groove. I haven't put it back on the bike yet as I'm looking for opinions to try and get back to at least 40mpg. The best it every run was with 170 main, 35 pilot jet 3 1/2 turns on the PMS and not pumpless. I currently have the PMS at 2 1/2 turns for the last two mods.

It's like sipping from a hot cup of coffee. If the coffee is too close to the brim, you end up gulping it. If it's too far away from the brim, you don't get enough. It's that perfect level in the cup that allows you to sip it.

Float level is just the same procedure. The vortex of the carb sucks the fuel up like a hot cup of coffee.

I use a 175 main jet, 40 pilot, 2.5 on PMS, 4 clip no spacer and get around 39mpg city and around 50 hwy.... Its hard to tell from the picture about your float....All I can say is it looks like mine but the measurement has to be precise.

I can't find the reference picture, but it seems to me your float is a little high. If the flat straight seam on the float is aligned with the outer edge of the bowl it works out well. Suspect your running rich due to float being a little high.

Davej can advise better than I can. Get him to look over the picture .

Your float looks to high in the pics. Try and duplicate the pic in Odo's dry set article, where you are looking straight at the side of the float, and can see the short tower Odo's references. Look at his pic, and then take a pic from the same angle etc., on your carb.
You can also(and should)check it, using the tube on the carb bowl drain. It sould be 4 to 5 mm above the bowl to carb mating surface. Check it at the manifold side(rear)of the carb, with the bike upright, not leaning over.

Remember, with the carb upside down like in the pic, if you lower the float, it'll actually come up, in the pic.

The Odo page is gone, as well as Doc's link/pics for the float.

Although someone on FB saved the page and posted a pic for Shane.
