Which carb did you run with before it started acting up?
He was running this used carb, with the 175 main, 35 pilot, clip in the 4th.
This is the carb that was on the bike when he went to the Blues and BBQ in Kentucky last week. He was experiencing starvation issues, and didn't know if it was the pump relocate, or maybe the roll over valve was messing up. This happened numerous times, he'd get about an hour on the highway, and the bike would then die. He'd pull over, and then the bike would start and away he'd go again
He set about trying to work out the issue, and....
He bypassed the pump(temporarily) when he got home, and was so amazed, that he decided to go pumpless?
I was surprised that the bike wouldn't run with the 170 main, and the clip in the 4th like before. It would idle, but when he rolled on the throttle, it'd starve and snort. That's what made me wonder about the needle, so I told him to put the 175 back in, which he did. Now, it'll idle, and he can roll on the htrottle, but when he puts it in gear and tries to ride off, it snorts, backfires, and misbehaves.

ya got me confused by where the float is measured from, why measured from short tower? usually it's measured from mating surface. If anything, float is not adjusted right I would think.
sorry, but this is one mod I would never consider, ya want pumpless, go with a HSR carb. This carb was never meant to be pumpless, if it were, Mikuni would have made a float valve for this application. It might seem to work, but, I bet that there will be some situations of road condition, where it will plumb right fail. I'd rather know I could ride without a fuel issue on 100% of roads. The chances of pump failure is probably less than 1% when you take into account all the Roadies out there. But even then, a direct fuel run to the carb will usually allow you to limp home.
I know Erb, but it works.
The short tower, is the one in this tech piece... The nickles thickness down the tower, is for the 04 and later carbs(all carbs based on a tech memo from Yamaha)

I had him snap a pic from the same angle, to make sure it was what it needed to be.

New stock carb had very similar results. Idle ok, but any attempt to ride would backfire and snort. I could "ease" it up to 2nd and 3rd gear, but ANY significant twist would cough and sputter.

Dumb question, but would my Dyna 3000 be of any issue here? I'm going double check the connections are sound. ?
Grasping.

So you can rev it to your hearts content in neutral? Have you tried holding it at a higher rev in neutral to see if it pops and dies?
As far as the grizzly valve. Would install it to begin with. Best case of keeping the bowl full.

How about the accelerator pump, that working or has it been turned way down?

Is it the same scenario???, idles and revs fine on the stand, but won't in gear? This stock carb, should be identical to the one you accidently drilled the wrong plug on, that resulted in you buying the one you rode to Kentucky, yes? The reason I ask, is I was surprised you could get the stock carb to handle it, with the pipes and Air kit you have on the bike.

The "original" carb was perhaps modded by the previous owner. What I miss drilled was not the PMS plug. That had already been removed which tells me it wasn't totally stock.
This carb (stock new this week) still has the PMS plug. It had similar results as my recent carb.
