Painting the bike 6 Months, 1 Week ago
So I bought Smokes bike a month ago and have now got the supplies coming to do the paint job it needed. They arrive tomorrow, 18 cans of everything I will need will be staged in the garage at that point. I bought a bunch of rattle can paint form lil Daddy Roth and everyone has an opinion about that I am sure. But I will be going in to do the paint as soon as the humidity drops a bit more. Doing a rattle can flake job with candy will be an adventure and I plan on doing pics all along the way to post up here for everyone to comment on and see. I would like to know what pic site to use since photoshitbucket is no more.

I have stuff together and will post it bit by bit form spray booth construction to final cut and polish. Take it easy on the comments because I have hopes of getting it done the way I want it to look and Im not expecting a pro looking job but I think I can pull this off just the same.

I was thinking of rattle canning mine but I got a gut a local guy to paint all my tins (I removed from boke) for $600.....would have been $400 but I chose a tri-coat paint which is a lot more $. Turned out very nice. For $600 total (parts and labor) I didn't want to mess with making a booth and all the prep work.

If you're doing it with spray cans, I would assume other than your time, you won't have a tremendous amount invested in the paint job. If you take your time, I bet it can come out pretty nice.
And like any of the other mods we do the bikes, there's the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
Good luck, I'll be waiting to see the before and after pics.

It certainly will!!! I've done a few Kandy jobs and it's hard enough getting the paint to look even with a high quality paint gun. Same thing with flake ... if it doesn't lay down even you'll see stripes and different reflectivity.

Good Luck.

Re:Painting the bike 6 Months ago
There's no reason not to use rattle cans for a paint job as long as you treat it like any other paint. Today you can get high quality paint in your choice of color in cans and ready to spray. When it came time to paint my fairing I opted to go this route even though I have all the equipment you need, cause that's one of the things I do for a living. In my case I found an epoxy spray paint that closely matched the stock color of the bike and used that instead of ordering the more expensive stuff. The tricky part was matching the pearlescent, but with a little ingenuity I managed to pull it off using one of my airbrush tools. In less time than it would take to ship the paint to me I had the entire job done including the ghostly ghost flames that I shot using the clear coat mixed with pearl. The only thing you have to be careful of is the cans lose pressure toward the end and can splatter a bit. To prevent this you have to STOP using that can long before it's empty. You can of course decant the remaining paint into a spray gun and use it but that's why you're using a rattle can in the first place...you don't have a gun.
