I see that Davej started the topic on another thread, hoping to catch it in one place here before it goes too far. We all know that you put in 4 quarts of oil (then break the dipstick off..), but who is measuring what they get out? I usually let mine drain a long time. I know it only gets a little more out, but I find something else to do while that thin thread of oil still drips out. I thought I was low this year. I know that some is in the filter, and some spills, but what are the other results? I don't let mine drain for a long time and get out a little less than you got maybe an inch or 2 lower in the jug. But keep in mind that the oil I don't get out should be in there for the next time I drain it and I should now get out the full 4 qts and I don't. JMO but I'm gonna start putting in a little more than 4 qts. If I was to run 5K between changes I hate to think how much oil I'm really running with, or should I say how much oil I'm "NOT" running with. I'll also say that when my oil temp gauge was still working (I need a new sending unit) the oil temp was always higher after a few thousand miles. Now I know it was because the oil was low. I was wondering if I would end up overfilling, not draining 4 quarts, but leaving some in and then over filling by adding 4 quarts. But you have a good point, if you over filled every year, one year you would get 4 quarts out. Sooo, where is the oil going...? I've blamed filter, spillage, and a little drain plug leak for winter storage. The Road Star holds a TOTAL of 5 Litres/5.3 US Quarts of oil, but you don’t use that much unless you strip the engine down.
