He took up a lot of time and space to say, "don't pay too much for a used motorcycle". Didn't find it all that interesting.

This is a great conversation starter, it seems like everybody has a very strong opinion about Craigslist. I have always set my budget below market rate and looked for something that was being hawked because of a simple malady. I have been really lucky, but it does take a lot of time and effort. You can save big if you do it right.
In my experience, used vehicles are very dangerous when you expect a pristine specimen. They are incredibly rare, and most any purchase does require at the very least some maintenance. Be really careful!

How ironic.

Re:Craigslist Motorcyle Value - Article 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I just recently found out about selling a bike. I had a Honda CBR 600 that I wanted to sell but I didn't want to hassle with Craigslist or selling on my own. I found out that the local dealer would set it in his used bike room on consignment(10% sales fee)and take the hassle out of it for me. After a few weeks it still hadn't sold so I went in to have them drop the price and ended up just selling it to the dealer. I signed the title over to them and walked off with a check, everyone was happy.

(Fast forward to last week 4 months later) So last week I get a letter from a local hospital asking for my insurance info on a motorcycle that was in a accident to pay a medical bill. WTF???? So I call the hospital and the person that bought the bike wrecked it and the title was still listed in the state of MI in my name. Again WTF??? I sold it to the dealer 4 months ago. So now pissed off I call the dealer. They say that the person that bought the bike lived out of state and they can't do a title transfer to a state other than MI so they give him a transit registration and a 30 day temp plate, handed him the title with my name on it that was signed over to the dealer and sent him on his way to transfer the title on his own in his state. Well guess what he didn't do,Yep he didn't do it before he wrecked it. They say he had insurance but no medical coverage. Now even though I have proof of sale I can hope that no one comes after me in a law suit. I sent proof of sale to the hospital and they said that was good enough for them. Hopefully that is all I will hear about it.

I guess my point is just because you sell or trade something to a dealership don't mean you are out from under it. When you sell something on Craigslist make sure you handle the paperwork properly at the DMV and don't just hand over a signed title. At least get a copy of the dated/signed title along with a copy of the purchasers DL if possible if you don't go to the DMV for the transfer out of your name. For me it was a lesson learned.

I never have any vehicles leave my driveway without a change in title in the new owners name. I park it in my garage with the doors locked until then. I had a buddy with a similar story as yours and just not taking any chances. Had a Dodge Neon parked in my garage for a month before the owners showed up to claim it. lol I still had full payment so I was laughing.

I thought I was safe buy selling to the dealership. I would have been if the buyer was from Michigan. I never knew that out of state buyers were different. If you or me did what the dealer did it would be considered jumping title. I guess they get a pass on jumping title. Maybe Bubbakaunna can elaborate a little as he works at a dealership.
