Need a lil help guys 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I know this is a Road Star forum but was curious if someone could help this ole Okie out. Have a '06 V Star 650 factory stock, has been sitting up for about 2 years. Drove the bike home (40 miles) put on another 150 miles on it slipped a new K&N filter on it. Used stock air box. road about 10 miles lost power had to limp home. pulled plugs found back plug fouled out. front plug had the right color. Replaced plugs ran like new for about 30 miles lost power again pulled plugs and front plug was wet porcelain perfect white, rear plug white and dry. Changed plugs again bike ran good for about 5 miles then lost power again 0-15 mph was the best I could get out it every time I lost power. I have changed fuel filter could the K&N be causing this problem and no the carb hasn't been jetted. Thanks in advance for your all's help with this issue

After two years sitting, did you clean the dual carbs, fuel lines and gas tank? Also some carb parts might be dried out and leaking. Carb gurus here can give you the specifics.

thanks I was leaning toward that. I don't have any experience with motorcycle carbs as my Trigger is FI. I bought this for the boy as a starter bike. I bought it from a dealer and they supposedly checked it out I have ran a half a can of sea foam through it and on the second tank of gas. just wanted some ideas where to start.

Thanks Buck

Unless the entire fuel system was cleaned out, it is likely the ethanol gas has turned to gel in some passageways and in the bottom of the tank. It has to come out and just adding fresh gas may not do.

My first bike was a Vstar 1100 that had been sitting a few years. It ran terrible until the carbs were cleaned. It ran like a champ afterwards. Everything was plugged and gummed up. Good luck

1st....put the stock airfilter bavk in it and check to see if the K&N filter had too much oil on it....could get into carb. While air filter is out and air box is open run bike and spray seafoam (deep creep) into carb while revving motor to keep from dying. Stop engine. Putair filter and box bavk in, change plugs again put fresh gas in tank and 1/2 cam seafoam, replace fuel filter (inspect old full filter....cut it open)....ride bike and see how it acts.

If that doesn't do it need to pull carb and send it to someone to have it gone over......and forget the dealership....they will likely screw you around and waste your time and not do anything productive.

I would balance the carbs. When I had a 650 there was a write up on their web site on how to build a cheap, I forget what you call it, thing out of fork oil and tubing to balance the carbs. Try to balance at various RPM.

Thanks everybody for the help and advice $250 later and a pair of rebuilt carbs she is running like a top. Carb dude said gaskets were dried out and carb was partially gunked up I guess enough gas was getting through to let it run at low speed (hence the boy was just learning) again thanks guys

I was going to suggest checking the air pressure in the tires. But I'm still learning here. LOL

Glad you're set.
