Re:tire replacement? 7 Years, 6 Months ago
I would never recommend anything unsafe, so practice as you will. Personally I had a big drywall screw go right through the center of the tread on my 240 Metzler rear tire. Bought the Stop and Go Plug system to get through the week ( http://www.stopngo.com/motorcycle.asp ). That was about 2 months and 3500 miles ago and I have not lost more that 2 PSI over that time. I know I should get a new tire but that plug system is awesome and has been rock solid.
So, for safety sake, replace the tire. But realistically, get a set of these plugs for when you do need them. They are the real deal.

When it comes to tires, I do not screw around, bike or cage. They are your only connection to the road. I replace all my tires way before they hit the tread wear indicators or if there is ANY damage to them. I see a lot of riders and cagers cruising around on "Maypops" ( bald tires) and it's just plain stupid... I wonder what kind of condition those rider's rear tires were in that went down in Sturgis?

I wouldn't hesitate, get it changed. Not sure of your riding conditions, but with the heat this summer, it doesn't take much to weaken a tire and cause it to blow out. I know it is expensive, just changed mine last week, but a lot cheaper than an ambulance call and hospital bills. Ride safe.

I guess I'm unlike most. I have ridden on a plugged tire for thousands of miles. Modern plugs are not like they used to be and tires are much stronger than in years past. I'd maybe throw in a bottle of slime and ride until it wears out.

Ask me about my attention deficit disorder or my pie or my cat. A dog. I have a bike. Do you like TV? I saw a rock. Hi.

I've put plugs in my truck tires for years and NEVER had a problem. I work in construction so I've had too many to count. I pulled a 3/8" bolt out and stuffed in 5 plugs. I've plugged the sidewall atleast four times, but only ran them on the rear just incase. On a bike I wouldn't hesitate to run one on the rear, but not on the front. Most tire shops won't do it at all and tell you its unsafe but what they really want is to patch it and charge you 5x the price. Just my opinion.

Don't Know for sure guy's... But I think my ass or my passenger's ass is worth more than a tire.
In an emergency on the road I would plug it, but only to get it home or to the nearest shop.

Re:tire replacement? 7 Years, 6 Months ago
I've been riding for a year now. Bought a used bike and first thing I did is replace the tires (not knowing how old, ect. the tires were). But this thread has prompted a question to this rookie...

How do you know when a tire needs replacing? I've put over 3,500 miles this summer on my bike (still attempting to wipe the smile from my face). I'll be checking the pressure to make sure it's appropriate, but did I read on these posts that a MC tire has a "stripe" showing when the tread wears down?

Thanks,
Jim

They have tread bars built in. I change at about 2/32nds if all else is ok with the tire.
