Re:BULBS in dashboard 7 Years, 8 Months ago
Folks, I've been trying to replace a couple of burned out instrument bulbs on my 1999 Roadstar Silverado. It appears that they didn't carry "replacement" bulbs until the 2000 model year which appears to be redsigned. One dealer's solution was to sell me an $800 entire meter to get the lights to work! Ugh.

I just knew there was something better... after a month's search and finally taking the meter apart, I discovered the bulbs are in a socket that you can untwist from the meter's circuit board. Once I had the socket in hand, I found this forum's thread that directed me to the correct bulb at Radio Shack. 272-1092 ($1.79 pack of two).

It took 10 minutes to replace and works as good as new. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ! ! !

Somehow, my universe is back in synch and that nagging "keep me awake at night" compulsion is gone.

Jim

Are you talking about the indicator bulbs, or the ones that light up the dash at night? My indicator lights all work, but the lights that light it up at night don't. I took it apart one time..but chickened out ...I didn't take the module apart, because I was afraid I wouldn't get it back right!

Re:BULBS in dashboard 7 Years, 8 Months ago
Thank you for the great welcome! I look forward to sharing more with this group.

Yes, the speed-o lights. If you have the 1999 Silverado (all that I can comment on), it was fairly straight forward fix. There are 4 lights that luminate the speed-o. 4 screws to remove the cover and then a single screw (recessed on the back) that allows the speed-o to come out. Once you have that done, there are 4 brown sockets that you can remove by a quarter turn to the left. You'll have to remove the bulb from the socket by unbending the lead wires to the bulb... remember how they are being removed. Put the replacement bulb in with the lead wires that you'll have to bend to shape and trim with scissors (the length of the leads). Put the socket back with a quarter turn to the right and viola!

I replaced all 4 of mine since I had the unit apart (hoping not to have to do it again for a while). Took about 10 minutes total.

As for the indicators lights (High beam, signal, and nuetral... not sure if that is a different model of bulb or not, so I just left those alone)

Again, thanks for the welcome and I hope this contributes to someone.

Jim

I can't remember if Radio shack had them or not, but did a search a few yrs back on it, and found them in red, blue, green and yellow. they are out there though.
