Changed my oil pump gear... 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Today I replaced the oil pump gear in my '01. Easier job than I expected. For what it's worth, mine was manufactured in Sept. of '01 and it had the old style gear. Some were wondering about the timing for the change-over by Yamaha so it was sometime after Sept. This is one thing I won't have to worry about anymore.

Did your other one go bad? How involved is it to change it out and how much is it to do? Is this another recommended mod for the roadie?

I did it as a precaution. The early model R* ('99, '00 and '01) have a "weak" oil pump gear that could break. Some have broken. It was re-designed to beef it up. The part is not too expensive and the job is really easy, even for me. There is a "tech" article that gives step-by-step instruction. I don't know your model year but there is a recall for some tranny work and most people get this gear changed at the time of the recall. Labor is free but you will have to pay for the part, anywhere from $50-$70 dollars.

Thank you for the info, mine is a 03, so I should have nothing to worry about.

My new gear is on the way for my 2000. Thanks for sharing about the ease of upgrade!

I changed mine last week when I installed the Barnett spring. Mine is an 02 and it had the old style gear also. If you got an 02 or an early 03 it might pay to check it out.

If you have an older bike....change it.

Mine failed. Burnt my motor. Not fun.

Only upside is because the rest of the bike was mint,I used it as an excuse to do a complete rebuild and put in the PR 108 kit. Nice to be doing 120 kmh in 5th and be able to twist the throttle to pass.

This is my strategy. I am going to let it ride and when and if it all goes that's my cue to break out the tools. I have 42k on it though and it runs like a Singer. I have more than got my money out of this engine. I am in the bonus round as far as I am concerned.
