Seal weep from Synth, 10w40 any worse than 20w50? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Last year, I switched to Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 because of all the lifter problems I was experiencing, along with general engine chatter. I've been largely pleased with the results however, I have experienced significant oil weeping at a number of the seals; which is common when switching from dino to full synth oil on an older, high mileage motor. When synths first hit the market, it used to happen all the time to the Porsche, BMW, MBZ guys when I worked in that industry; so I'm not too worried. It's nothing serious. You just have to wipe things down from time to time and keep the oil topped off. But I am a *little* concerned the lighter 10w40 could be even worse at weeping, especially once the temps warm up again, which won't be long here in CA.

Anyone ever have any problems with the synth 10w40 weeping worse than the 20w50?

Sounds like you got too much pressure inside your engine are your engine breather hoses occluded. didn't you say you had some buzzing going on too. too much crankcase pressure will push oil out regardless of oil weight if I remember there are two hoses coming out of each head that should go to the air cleaner or two separate filters so dirt does not get sucked in to the engine on the upstroke when's the last time you did a compression check

Synthetic oil is not your problem I did the switch many years ago and have no leaks nor does most of the others that are on here. You must have too much oil in the system OR you have too high a crankcase pressure. Make sure your crankcase breather line isn't plugged that will cause to high a pressure. The second hose on the rear just goes to the oil tank make sure it isn't plugged as well. If all that checks out then you may have leakage past your rings which will raise the crankcase pressure.

Yes,by design the significantly lighter m1 10-40 syn oil should weep or leak more in the same motor that already has seals/gaskets that are weeping & or leaking with significantly heavier m1 20-50 syn oil.

I did a VBAK air filer mod and used Amsol 20-50 oil and had an oil leak at the rear valve cover and at the shifter point on the clutch cover. I bought a crank vent from EP Performance and have had no oil leaks since. It gives you roughly no crankcase pressure because it is a one way valve, lets pressure out but doesn't let any in. I noticed my Warrior idled and ran much smoother. It is a little expensive but worth the money to me.

I had one of those once. It's a Krankvent from ET-Performance.
