Early on some of the 1600's came out with a bad batch of lifters. But I would think those have since been replaced.

I have been told that if you Idle your bike down to sound like an H-D at idle ,It will not deliver the oil to the cams and the top end which will cause cam and lifter fatigue and cause you problems and cost you $$.

FWIW mine was in potato world when I got it, and shortly after 10K (got it with 9K miles) is when the lifter crapped out.

That's a new one for me. We're they 1600's or 1700's?
==================

This isnt a new thing,i have been on RSC since 2009 and have seen/read posts from at least 8-10 fellow RSC members with bad cams and or lifters.

Maybe 1-2 of those 8-10 R*s with bad HYD FT lifters/cams were caused by defective parts but the other 8 cam/lifter failures were very likely due to improper oil like pass car/truck oil with lower zddp (only 800ppm max) being used in the R* with flat tappet cams .

The FT cam/lifters in the R* require a min of 1200ppm zddp for proper FT cam/lifter protection so using improper non motorcycle specific oil along with not doing timely/proper oil & filter changes too are the most likely reason for the majority of FT cam/lifters failures in the R*.

That why when buying a used R* its very imptortant to get the bikes history from when it was new to current owner selling it to ensure its always had oil with a proper higher 1200ppm or more zddp lvl to properly protect the FT cam/lifters in the R* so you dont get hit with a very costly reapir.

If the bike didnt always have proper oil or you cant verifiy it dont buy it,thats because new cams from yami are very expensive ,but you can use automotive hyd lifters at a fraction of the cost for EOM yami hyd lifters.

Yes,much lower then the Yami idle spec of 900 rpm for the r* will reduce oil pressure (esp in hot weather) that in turn reduces oiling to valvetrain (lifters/cams/rockers etc) too.

Not sure about the size. He mainly works on all other brands than HD. There is another indy shop in town that handles that brand.LOL

FYI,HD's run FT cam/lifters just like the R* so they both require same type bike oil with higher zddp to properly protect the Ft cams/lifters.

So...
The synthetic oil specs don't list ZDDP level> 1200.
They list Zinc/phosphors content .01100 or something like that. How can you tell ZDDP content ?

I thought most HD's (in at least the Evo and Sporty motors) use roller lifters for quite some time ....

=============

The .1100 ZDDP (Zinc/Phos) your reffeirng too = 1100ppm zddp which i would not rec for old school FT cam'd motor.

For example ,Mobil-1 syn v-twin 20w-50 has 1700ppm zddp and Amsoil mcv 20w-50 syn has 1400+ ppm zddp and both those are oils are specifically formulated for old school air cooled v-twin apps running Ft cams & lifters.
