Pulley Nut. Fell Off & Now Leaking 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Driving with the Wife and we hear some "grinding" noise on decel. Pulled over check belt and brakes, all looked ok. I decided to ride it home about 6 miles. I had to continually keep throttle on the Belt in order to not get the grinding noise. Made it home with minimal grinding due to keeping power to the belt at all times.

Pulled the cover and found the nut was clanking around in the case from falling off completly. The washer with the tabs was half missing and chewed up.

I odered the washer, cleaned the white rollers and have retightened the nut and put her back together until the part comes in. I tightned down the nut as tight as possible

Now I have oil dripping from the cover. I'm guessing the seal on the back of the pulley is leaking. I hope it just came loose and just needs to be reseated.

My questions are:

1. How do I properly tighten the nut? (tire off ground? Loosen tension on belt, ect?)
2. Does anyone have the part #'s for the Seal and the O-ring?

I want to start by tightening the nut properly and hopefully reseat the seal first. Then if needed move to the inner things.

Thanks

I am probably not the most knowledgeable person on the Road Star ... but I looked at my copy of the service manual and it states to tighten the pulley nut to 61 ft.lbs while holding down the brake so I would assume the belt needs to be properly adjusted so the brake will stop the pulley from turning while you tighten it.

As far as part numbers go I find this site very helpful: http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/c/yamaha_motorcycle/parts just select your year then model. Hopes this helps.

you also need to make sure the splines are not chewed up on the pulley shaft. If they are then you have to replace the shaft which is a major deal.
Also when done making repairs, make sure you put red lock-tight on the pulley nut before you tighten.

I've been down this road twice on two different roadies, and both times I tried to just retighten the nut, but the damage had already been done, had to replace both the pulley and the middle driven shaft. I know some have been able to just retighten it but I wasn't that lucky. Best way to tighten the nut is have someone step on the rear brake and tourque the nut to specs, red lock tite is good but if the splines on the shaft and pulley are worn, nothing will keep it from walking and loosening up again. I even tried to weld the nut on with no success. Follow the steps in the repair manual for disassembly and it goes pretty easy.

You may have chewed up the small little o-ring p/n 23 in the diagram

That will leak oil with just a small nick in it.

So, took the pulley off and inspected the splines and they look fine on the shaft (thank goodness). I didn't pull the o-ring out tho because when I had retightned it it didn't leak until it loosened again. I'm hoping it's ok. I didn't order the o-ring when I ordered the washer

Once back togehther I'll recheck for leaks and will have to tear it down again for the o-ring if leaking continues. I'm going to go with the Blue Locktight until the o-ring situation gets figured out

It just sucks that I have to wait a week for the tab washer to come in!

Jpitner, thanks for the parts website, very cool!

There should be extra tabs to bend on the old lockwasher. If you're running without the lockwasher than don't. Blue won't hold the nut tight and it will spin off if you're riding without the lockwasher.

I'm not riding without the lockwasher. I'm just going to tighten everything up to see if the seal still leaks. The old washer is half missing and mangled. no reusing that badboy

I'm really just hoping the seal is ok at this point. Is it easy enough to get to to investigate? I have the pulley off at this point
