Need some clutch help. 3 Years, 8 Months ago
I am doing the Barnett clutch spring conversion and have a few concerns. I have it open and just removed the stock clutch spring plate. When I pulled the plate off a couple of the friction plates came off which made me notice that they wernt all in there the same way. The tech article says "There is a double notch in one of the cogs of the plates and they must match up to the embossed double circles on the clutch housing. Must be installed same way!!!!"

The double notches do not match up on most of them.

1) Should I pull them out and make them match up or will that cause problem since they are in there wrong already?

2) where are the embossed double circles? I dont see what he is talking about. Do I need to remove the plates to see the circles?

Thanks to all in advance.

Danny.

If you look in the Tech article and look at the picture pointing to the two groves in the plates you can see the embossed circles he is talking about. Kind of hard to see in the photo but if you look at the Red arrow in the picture. Now take the head of the arrow and make it a triangle. On the left side halfway between the top and the left bottom point you can see faintly the circles stamped into the clutch housing. Easier to see when you are looking for it in front of you.

As for moving them I don’t know the answer to your question. My plates all came out together with the way its described in the tech article and put back exactly the way they were taken out. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

This is how mine was when I did it, in my case there not "embossed" they're "raised" dots and theres two of them, and they weren't lined up with anything, notice the dots at the far left toward the bottom of the pic[/img]
and how they went back in[/img]

Your bike is an 04 and it has been running like that for a long time. I'm not real sure why they line up the plates like that or what the grooves are really for but it can't be anything significant. Ya never know it could have been something in the manufacturing of the assembly or for an alignment tool on the assembly line. Just like the little star clips on the brake drums on a car. they were just there to hold the drum on while it was going down the assembly line. Obviously if the tech article said that it "must be" like that the article is wrong because yours was not like that and it ran fine for a long time. I guess this is my way of saying I wouldn't worry about it to much. Straighten them out if you want to (just because you are in there) but I wouldn't get to concerned about it

It's not the original clutch, I had the slippage in the higher gears and didnt know any better at the time and took it to my local shop to have it replaced. Two mistakes there, they didnt know any better either or they just ripped me off and now that I know how easy it is to get in there I will never have to pay for that again.

I am going to straighten them up since Im in there. Not one of them was lined up right.

Thanks.

Here is another stupid question, does anyone know why the tech article says to use the original bolts to secure the Barnett plate? Like I said stupid question I just like to reasons and explinations.

Im guessing by the picture its an older version of the plate and it probably didnt come with the bolts. Maybe.

Well here is an interesting fact. The Clymer manual says that the 99 - 03 models the two friction disc notches must align with the clutch housing with the marks. 04 and newer the single friction disc notch must align with the clutch housing marks.
