How stupid is this idea? 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Sooooo…. My sister in law is getting married next summer here in Washington State. There will be an optional reception in Virginia due to the fact that his parents are not able to make it to the wedding here. Me and my brother in law always joked about “scooting across America” on scooters. Well now the ability to do it on something a little bigger is at our feet.

With our schedules we will both only be able to dedicate a total of 8 days of riding as well as the one for the reception. It will all be freeway/highway speeds. Below is a tentative list of the route details. Anyone think this is a crazy stupid idea? It sounded great before I put it on paper. Now it just seems borderline dangerous. Longest day I have ever rode was 550 miles, but then again those were all slow twisty roads. I have been on my bike for multiple 12 hour days in a row. Anyone have any input? 16 States and 5700 miles in 8 days.

Trip there:

Day one: Graham WA to Bozeman MT 700 miles
Day two: Bozeman MT to Fargo ND 752 miles
Day three: Fargo ND to South Bend IN 737 miles
Day four: South Bend IN to Destination 714 miles

Total: 2903 miles

Return trip:

Day one: Richmond VA to Champaign IL 748 miles
Day two Champaign IL to Mitchell SD 705 miles
Day three: Mitchell SD to Bozeman MT 738 miles
Day four: Bozeman MT to Graham WA 699 miles

Total: 2890 miles

Grand total: 5793 miles. 8 days of riding.

States: Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

We did that in our van on a business trip.

Las Vegas to Laredo, TX to Key West, FL and back home. About 6k miles in eight days. Even with our butts in comfy seats with A/C and perfect weather it was a total burnout.

I think by the end of day two you'll be wondering WTH you did. The reception day will be something you're using to try to physically recover but it won't serve well because you'll know the repeat trip you'll have to make heading home.

And that's assuming GOOD weather. Sucky weather and/or breakdowns and down the tubes things may go.

Then again, if you're really up for one of those 'just so we can say we did' kind of rides then add some miles to your first few days to allow for more rest and/or problems before you arrive in VA.

Tempting for sure. A three day total ride of 700 miles a day might work for starters and give you something to gauge the next ride on...

I guess it depends on your age, and physical condition. When my wife and I got married 30 years ago, we made a 1800 mile non stop trip to Canada every year. Stay a week, then non stop home. It was fun 30 years ago, but my 58 year old body couldn't handle it now. Or maybe I could, but it sure wouldn't be fun.
300 miles a day I'd go for, as long as there was a Hilton and good meal at the end of each day. Otherwise, I'm flying.

I’m 29 and my brother in law is 31 we are both in good shape. If we stretched it out a day on either end it would bring our average down to 577 miles instead of 720. And this ride would not be for pleasure more for the “hey look what we did” factor. Doing 80mph on the interstate for 5k plus miles will not allow for much sightseeing…

I seriously thought about riding to Vegas for my brother's wedding. Problem was I was the best man and if something went wrong it would have messed things up bad.
I would be tempted as hell, but I'm a trucker and 700 mile days in the truck are the norm. I've done 600 back to back a couple times on the bike.

I'm 62 yrs old and after day one I'd be dead. Now a days I ride for fun only and frankly my antique ass can't handle
that many days in a row in the saddle. Crazy stupid? perhaps but it sounds to time constrained to be fun.

I don't think it sounds that stupid to me. Last summer I did a 1000 mile day and 850 miles the second day. I also did 2 700 miles days and a 600 mile day a couple days later on the return trip. (different route) I was about whooped at the end of the last day though.
It's not real hard to put down some good miles in a day if you get a real early start. For me that works a lot better than trying to ride late into the night.
that being said, if you are not used to doing long distance rides, you will be extra sore.
The big issue I see is time restraint. If you are going that distance on a tight schedule, one or 2 rainy days could throw you plans right out the window.

At 29, I'd go for it. I ran my first Marathon at 49, and when I hit the 20 mile mark I told myself I'd never do that again. Last year was my 7th. And my biggest year with 1800 miles. Just to tell myself "I did it"

Piece-O-Cake....just fly out there, buy a new Indian or Venture and ride home! Half the miles in double the days.
