Thanks JD, it's also on it's way. This is very much turning into a good learning experience.

When you have time, go to the "Jetting", or "Technical Discussions" forums, and go back to the very first post, and then start working your way forward. Almost everything we discuss here, has been kicked around for years.

I'm sitting here on a very slow day at work reading Ken Sexton's primer on the principals of operation of a Mikuni 40mm CV carb. The more I know the more I can take care of myself.

Thanks to you, JD, 68jmpr and several others who've taken the time to guide me along, my bike is already taking on a mechanically leaner, more powerful tone.

Better still, if something happens on the road, I'll be better prepared to handle it myself.

I haven't cut it on either of mine. Just remember, if you chop it off, it means less fuel on reserve.

I ended up taking an inch off, and I'll remember about the reserve, thanks. I looked and looked and couldn't find the post I read that stated Why I should cut it... but several said to so I did. Worst case scenario, I can always buy a new one.

I am having a hard time understanding why you would have to cut the intake screen off. How can that have any effect on how much fuel can pass through it? Not being difficult, just trying to make sense of it.

I left the screen in place on the main tube and cut it at the bottom then reset it. My curiousity is why shortening it helps. Initially I thought it was for cornering to the right and keeping fuel available.

He's not cutting the screen off, he is lowering the main feed tube by 1/2 inch. You would remove the screen, cut the tube, and replace it. Some have done it.

I wouldn't mess with it, unless you've exhausted all other options. If you have vented the tank, and added a filter to separate the air from the fuel in case of slosh in the tank adding bubbles, and still aren't getting 4.1 gallons approx., when you need to switch, I am clueless as to what benefit there is in shortening the tube. Some have done it, and their troubles went away. I haven't shortened either of mine, and am fine.
If fuel can't run down the tube to get to the carb without the pump, then it shouldn't be able to run down the tube with the pump. All things being equal, gravity is either feeding the carb, or it's feeding the pump so the pump can feed the carb.
