Gee, without reading all the posts. I pulled the pump, ran the fuel line over the manifold, and run on the reserve setting. No new needles, no cutting or removing anything else... and no problems! (I did put a cheap Autozone in-line fuel filter in.)

I say do the minimum first, and if you experience an issue, deal with it, should it arise. I haven't had any on either of my 2 R*s.

1. Buy Grizzly valve
2. Buy fuel line
3. Buy fancy chrome fuel filter
4. Realize your bike is actually working just fine with the fuel pump that came with it\
5. Throw 1, 2, and 3 in the junk drawer with the other bright ideas you had before that

Re:Pumpless Check List 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Just went pumpless and have had no issues. I do have to switch to reserve before the light comes on like many have said. Some say they run on reserve all the time which makes sense, but..... how far can you push it now before you run out of gas? The farthest I went on reserve before going pumpless was just over 200 miles. I have a feeling I cannot do that now on the pumpless setup. I don't want to find out the hard way and run out of gas. Also, wondering if the Pingel high flow petcock would give me the same range before going pumpless.

BTW - this site is awesome and has helped me soooo many times.

I've been to the 180-190 mile point, before having to switch to reserve running pumpless, but that was on basically flat roads, and no heavy throttle off the stops. I can routinely make it to the light, and beyond, with either of my bikes riding conservatively.

The Pingle won't make any difference. The issue is, there isn't a whole bunch of plumbing anymore, with the pump and fuel filter, to store fuel and avoid gulping air, as the level in the tank, gets to the top of the main petcock tube. With the petcock at the front of the tank, any hard acceleration or long right turns when you get close to the light, allows the tube to momentarily be above the fuel level in the tank. It gets air in the fuel line then, and when that air gets to the bowl, you get your stumble.

Some have removed the petcock, and shortened the main tube about a half inch, but that reduces the reserve cushion. I'm good as is, and switching to reserve more often, helps prevent condensate from building up at the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for the replies. I've only been down to reserve once since the pumpless mod. I will do some more experimenting. I may even put a small gas can in the saddle bag and purposely run it out just so I know for sure where my range really is. Before the mod, I knew exactly how far I could go after switching to reserve. Now I'm not so sure.

Bullstang - You must be getting 50mpg to get that kind of range. I'm around 43 to 45mpg, stage 1 jet kit and Hard Krome drag pipes.

Why not relocate your pump. There are two locations that are available. I drive with the Roadstar with the pump under the tank, just behind the switch. Other place is behind the right hand cover.
On the Blue bike I ride without a pump, just because I don't have any place for it. I planed a vacuum pomp, just like Doc did. But I rebuild the carb, changed the valve and used a High Flow petcock.
Both options gives no problems.

There are also riders here that removed the pump with no mod,s and they still ride with no problems.
