You stated that the battery died on a road trip. The first thing that I check for with battery issue is the battery itself. I charge it and check it. (I use a snap on battery tester. You might have to take it to have it tested). With a good battery the next test is the cables. Pull the plug wires off and throw two old spark plugs or ground wires to them, (to prevent damage to the coils) after disabling the ignition. You sand a clean spot on the negative post on the battery and a clean spot on the engine so that you can get a good reading, (very important). Put your positive lead from your voltmeter on the battery cable you cleaned and on the spot on the engine that you cleaned. Have an assistant hit the starter button for 3 seconds. Because both leads are on ground you should get 0 volts. A one volt drop is a hundred amp loss in the cable. You have just performed a voltage drop test. Test from positive to starter and from battery positive to the hot wire on the regulator. Check from regulator to alternator. Voltage drop testing is the best way to check wiring on any components. With positive cable connected you can hook up a test light between the negative cable and the negative post. There should be no transfer of energy if the ignition switch is off as you have no clock or alarm. Also most meters between the negative post and the negative cable in amp draw mode. A two amp draw will kill a 700 amp car battery in 28 hours. I hope that this helps.
