1700 road star oil 4quarts or 3 1/2 8 Years, 11 Months ago
Was in yamaha dealer friday last week to get bike inspected .Read bulletin given to me by mechcanic.saying Yamaha is telling their shop to only add 3.1/2 quarts oil to the 1700 at oil change. He told me 4 quarts cause to much pressure to build up, valves spring are sticking .Then he ckeck my oil took out 1/2 quart on the spot Question anyone else heard this or read this

I have not heard anything. How can oil pressure make a valve spring stick? That sounds funky.

Sounds like he's a quart low to me.

I've run 4 quarts since new in my '05 as recommended around here and have had absolutely no problems.

BTW the '05 specs say to run 4 1/2 right?. Wonder what the spec says for the newer bikes?

It has been a common thought that too much oil in the crankcase has been linked to the problems with SVS. I believe it got reinforced when Yamaha started putting out tech bulletins to reduce the amount of oil in the bikes. If they have put out one at 3.5 then its the second time they have reduced it.
