Fuel Pump Possibly? 9 Months ago
Hey Everyone.
I have an issue with my '07 Road Star. I went on a road trip from the beach to the mountains and put over 900 miles on my bike riding around the Blue Ridge Pkwy, Maggie Valley, Deal's Gap' etc. The bike ran great with the exception of one real bad case of "carb puke" and there was some sporatic blow back/out of the hyper charger - oil gas combo maybe? I thought I may have over oiled the K & N filter when I cleaned it before the trip. The bike started every time, ran strong - no issues. I went out yesterday to go for a ride and she turns over but won't start. I'm using the choke all the way out. If I push the choke all the way in & twist the throttle, and attempt to start, she runs for a 3-4 seconds and stops. I do not hear my fuel pump when I turn the ignition on.
My question is will the Road Star start if the fuel pump is bad?

Thanks for any input

If you are not hearing the fuel pump when you turn the key to on then it may be the pump. The easiest way to find out is to bypass the pump with some 5/16 fuel line from the petcock straight to the carb.

Oil and gas out the carb? Have you removed the rear valve cover vent tube from your intake and run it to a small filter of its own elsewhere so you don't dump oil fumes into the carb? Just 4 quarts of oil also, no more. Don't use the dipstick to check it. It's consistently inaccurate.

I guess I'll try that. So no fuel will make it through the pump if inop?

Sounds pretty simple solution. Found a new pump & a new fuel filter online for $35

Thanks Tug

If the bowl is full, the pump won't run. Having said that, if the pump is shot, it won't run either. Hook a 5/16 fuel line directly from the petcock to the carb, and bypass the bowl(er.....pump....) all together, and see if that fixes it.

When the carb pukes, you'll get gas into the air filter housing, as well as pushing out of the bowl vent. That would explain the gas oil mix mess.

If you roll the throttle wide open start the bike and then pull the enricher out and close the throttle at the same time, does it stay running?

I made a slight correction in my post. You'll gain nothing by bypassing the Bowl.DOH!! Bypass the pump.
