Time to address my valve / lifter rattle 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Yes I know these engines are noisy. Not this noisy. This one wasn't liike this before I sucked the nut from my air cleaner into the front cylinder. I removed the front head and had it inspected. All appeared to be ok. I dropped the pushrods on assembly and possibly mixed them up. remember it was only the front two.
When I first tried to start it after reassembly it wouldn't start. I soon discovered I didn't have the pushrod in the exhaust side rockerarm.
I pulled the rocker arms again and got the pushrods back in place and she started and ran perfect. Now after it's warmed up the front/exhaust valve/pushrod makes a lot of noise. Ive changed oil and it didn't help. It has to be very warm before it happens.
I intend to buy 2 new lifters from Yamaha and gut them and put the new guts in the old lifter cases to match wear to the cams. I will buy new pushrods as well. Any other advice would be very welcome.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't gut them I would just install them.

How many miles on the cam? Changing plungers between lifters might not work. Those things are a very precise fit and if one is cocked just a little it'll stick and might be impossible to remove - been there.

From what I've seen here new lifters on an old cam don't last very long. It can be tried though just use plenty of cam lube and take it real easy for a few hundred miles. Good luck.

We discussed this at the meet. If you gut and reassemble you can bench test it with a press before they go in. When I tried to replace mine (flat lifter) it ate my cams. I understand not wanting to risk it if fresh guts will work. If it doesn’t, ya gotta try new ones, just thought this approach might reduce the risk to the cams.

No problem with a new lifter on an old cam... but, you absolutely have to put plenty of that cam lube break-in goop on the lifter and cam lobe so that they can wear-mate... or they'll be eaten alive!

Also, the noise can easily be an adjustment issue, and since you did not say that you SAW a bad cam lobe or a bad lifter bottom, you might still be able to adjust it out?

Just sayin', but you hafta go with the simplest, easiest first before you go disassembin' and replacin'! Just sayin'!!!

If you find that you have a worn cam/lifter bottom I have a good 1700 cam and lifter set that I can make you a good deal on. IMO the reason that people think that a new lifter on an cam won't work is that by the time most people try replacing a lifter on an old cam they already waited too long and either the lifter bottom or the cam lope has already been damaged. The damaged old lifter bottom will be what damaged the cam then the new one just finished what was already messed up.

Did you check the pushrod for straightness after you installed it wrong? May have slightly bent it in the process. Myself, in your shoes, new lifters, new pushrods, I would go with new cams at this time as well. Then, if you do that, there should be no issues.

New cams are not cheap why would you replace if they don't look damaged and just because of a little noise? I would much rather take a chance that I would have to do the labor twice than just go and spend a bunch of un-needed money on a new cam/lifter. Fact is the cam and lifters aren't even sold as a set. The cams both come as a set and the lifters are part of the valve train and are sold individually and for a reason. Installing a lifter is an easy labor job and a lifter is only a few dollar item.

This thing runs perfect. It started this right after the head was pulled. I bought a aftermarket head gasket. I've even wondered if maybe it was thicker than the original.
I assume I messed up a lifter or pushrod when I didn't get them in right or just mixed up the pushrods but from what I read they are the same length for the front cylinder on a 1700
