Iron Butt 1 Year, 7 Months ago

I've been seriously thinking about the Iron Butt Saddle Sore and was wondering who here has tried it and was successful or not. If you weren't successful what caused you not to be or if you were what helped. My longest ride so far has been 12 hrs. Thanks for your input.

I did the saddle sore a couple months ago (ohio to texas 1026 miles) I think it us about 17 hrs. We left at about 3:30 am. we took canola bars, and peanuts to eat at gas stops and never stopped at a restaurant. The guy riding with me did it on a 250 nija. I took my HD electra glide.
I tried to make the butt-burner (1500/36) the next day but got a late start and missed it by 40 minutes.
I did end up doing 1800 in 41 hrs.
Leaving early helped alot.

I've got a saddle sore 1000 under 24 hours. If you plan your gas stops at 100 miles intervals, bathroom breaks, stop only for 12 minutes or less. You can make it to your start/stop position at 22 or 23 hours. When you stop for gas , you can use the gas print out as proof of your route. You'll need someone reliable to sign off on your start and stop times and start of origin and stop destination. ( all the forms you need can be found at the Iron Butt Association )
This was years ago, also if you do it by yourself or with as few people that will maintain the above standards you won't be fighting for time to complete the run. The bigger the group the more everyone wants to talk and bs. When you eat, don't eat a large lunch or dinner. Stick with a sandwich and a drink and move on. Take energy drinks, like gator aid to rehydrate. You will expend a lot of energy and you'll need to replace it.

I did almost 1100mi from Amarillo, TX back to Lincolnshire, Il on my way home from a visit to California to see my mother back on 2011. Wasn't official or planned just left that morning, kinda kept going as I didn't feel that tired or sleepy. Was in St. Louis and it's only 5 more hours might as well keep going if I can. Think it was close to 20 hours for me, Google maps say 15 1/2 hrs (but I don't think that stops are counted?). I only stopped for gas, restroom, and food-drinks. I'd advise making sure you have warmer weather gear than you think you"ll need. I was chilled to the bone with the shivers that wouldn't stop the last leg home. Night riding for hours on end and the body temp will drop fast. I was coming home the 1st week of September, not exactly sure what I saw the temp but I think I remember it getting into the 50's that night. The longest I'd gone before that was about 14 hrs. on the trip out stopped to visit in Fort Collins, Co to Mesa, Az. I'd say just be smart and don't push yourself beyond your physical or mental limits, you can' always do it another time. Be safe and good luck.

Jlb75, if you take raingear, just take a sweatshirt to wear under your rain gear jacket. You won't believe how warm you can be with just a rain gear jacket with a sweatshirt underneath!!! For nite time summer riding!!!

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking about the loop around lake Michigan but with all the towns you go through it would be time consuming. It would be a great ride if time wasn't a factor.
