Thinking I am jetted way to rich.. 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Ok so I am thinking that I am jetted way too rich for my elevation. I know the Makuni carbs auto adjust for elevation but I am getting a really heavy gas smell once the new duals are heated up.

Here is my current jetting

Needle Manufacturer: Barons
Needle Clip: 4
Jet Manufacturer: Barons
Main Jet Size: 172.5
Pilot Jet Size: 40
PMS Screw Manufacturer: Barons
PMS Turns Out: 2.5
My Elevation (ft): 5,280

Im thinking I should drop the main to a 170 and the pilot to a 37.5, any thoughts from the carb gurus?

I know I should have looked and written it down, but when I re-jetted my buddies carb a couple of weeks ago with the kit that was suggested from Freedom Performance, his 1600 ran if anything a little lean but I fixed that by backing the PMS out a little bit and then she simply roared.

So I am thinking smaller jets and a little tweaking of the PMS and I should have my 1700 dialed in.

If you think I am dead on with jetting than please just say so, if I am way off then state that please!

The engineer in me says to only change one thing at a time. That way you'll know the effect of what you changed. The backroom mechanic in me says to change both at the same time so you only have to mess with it once! Every time I listen to the backroom mechanic, I later wish I'd listened to the engineer!!

Your pilot circuit is a touch on the rich side for sea level elevation. #40 is right but you probably want to be less than 2.5 turns out.

I'll defer here as I don't know much about elevation, other than the fact that there is less air available

When are you getting the strong gas smell? At idle?

usually at idle yes, very prominent when choke is out, but that is to be expected to some degree.

The biggest reason I am thinking I am jetted too rich is the super low idle when releasing the clutch in first, I swear she drops down to 350-400 RPM as soon as I let off the clutch, I'm thinking I am flooding the engine and then it quickly catches back up once out of the initial dive.

At the very least, drop the pilot to the 37.5. If you spend ALL your riding time or the vast majority above 5000 feet , I would drop the main to a 170 as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone. To answer your question JD.

Yes most of our riding occurs in Colorado which is all pretty much 5000-13,000 ft above sea level. as you know, coming from a larger state, it takes hours to reach any one of our boarders and most of the surrounding states sit well above the 3000 feet above sea-level mark.

I'm thinking I will keep the needle on the 4th, same PMS settings, drop the main and pilot to 37.5 and 170 and see how she does.

Also I am getting horrid fuel economy, but then again my right wrist has a lot to do with that hahaha

Up and down hills and mountains beats up that fuel too. Might not be ALL in the wrist. I think your settings will work out. Check your float level while you are at it, just for an extra look on the fuel burn. High level will increase your burn.

Hey
I have a 1700 and I tried all combinations of the various jet sizes when I first decided to fiddle around in there, the carb. For me the best combo is 37.5 and the 170 and I'm at 1 3/4 turns out - she runs like a swiss watch...I think a touch lean for some but I've never had the bike run better

Another thing that you may want to look at is trimming the back of the knob on the choke/enrichener. Look up the sticky on it and see if it applies to you.

Drop the PMS to 2.0, and see how it runs. I wouldn't change more then one thing at a time.
The 40 and 172.5, is where many are.

Remember, you're not using the AIS anymore,

Unless your rolling the throttle a lot, the main size isn't that big of a deal(if you were using a 200, maybe).

Have you changed out the Needle and Seat? If you're running the pump, replace it with the OEM part.

What is the idle set at now? I'm not sure why the idle would drop that low, if it starts at 900 rpms, and you slip the clutch to get going.
