Vibrating fuel pump? 3 Years, 5 Months ago
|
|
I have had my 1999 Roadstar for about 3 months and mostly driven it locally and over the weekend, took a 600 mile road trip. Everything was going great until the ride home. While riding, the motor was not getting fuel and died. I pulled over and when I turned the ignition off and back on, the fuel pump & just kept vibrating and the motor was not getting fuel. After a short period of time, and a lot of patience, it started back up and ran great. This happened twice, and each time the same thing. I'm a bit restricted in my mechanical ability, and carbs have always been something that I'm not comfortable messing with. I'm thinking about just replacing the pump & the filter, and doing a bit of petcock cleaning. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just change the filter first and see how it does. Sounds like an obstruction .Simple things first. Usually when the pump quit's working it's shot and does not start up again.

You can eliminate the fuel pump all together, but it does take a little mechanical prowess. I got an RSC member to do mine free, sounds like you got a few guys near you , maybe they can help you out. All the info you need to do the job is on this site and the cost for parts is low too.

Four years ago, doing anything mechanical or electrical or otherwise on my bikes was like asking me to perform open heart surgery. I was SEVERELY restricted in any ability along those lines.
If you want to go pumpless and rejet your carb, it's a piece of cake with the guys on here. They can take you through the entire process with what you'll need to get it done and the step-by-step instructions. If I can do it, I believe anyone can do it.
Pumpless is the best thing that ever happened to my bike.
