STARTING PROBLEMS IN 2000 ROADSTAR 2 Minutes ago
OK here is the problem - having troubles starting my Roadstar - the starter sounds weak - checked plugs - I am getting spark - getting fuel- - the starter sounds weak and does not sound like it
did when I bought the bike last year. There are few things that it could be - starting motor - Rectifier & Regulator - Relay assy - OK mechanics which is more likely ? I am to far away from a Yamaha Mechanic and I would
rather not go that route. Just need some areas that it might be that I can replace or in case of the starter motor have it repaired. any Ideas- Bike had 60K miles
How big of a deal is it to replace the starter - - the thought of buying a new starter motor ( $ 300 + for the starter) is a bit much - unless someone knows of a good supplier that has a better price !
Help !!!

If you can get the issue to repeat, throw a meter or test light on the coil (low current/amp) side of the starter solenoid. That will let you know if the starter switch is working and getting juice to the solenoid.
If you're not getting juice to the solenoid, look at the stater switch and circuit.
If you're getting juice to the coil side of the solenoid, throw a meter/test lamp on the output side going to the starter. If the coil is getting energized, but your not getting juice on the starter side you have a solenoid issue.
(You can have a solenoid issue on the low current coil side , or the high current contact side, but either way you want a new solenoid)
The starter button supplies ground to the starter relay coil, not power. power is constant with the key in the on position.

Yep, but doesn't pushing the starter button still provide 12 volts when measured across the solenoid's coil?

It just completes ground to the relay coil to activate the relay. 12v is already at the coil with the key "on" along with the 12v for the rest of the ignition system
That is why there has always been a mystery to hooking up a ford relay. Also why I connected my ford relay the way I did.

So, if you are using a meter with one side grounded, probing with just the positive you would be confused. But if you put the meter/test lamp on the two coil side leads it would work out OK.
I thought the Ford relay could be hooked up the same way, but the reason to use the Yamaha relay to work the Ford relay is because the starter switch was borderline to use for carrying enough current (amps) to energize the higher current demand of the Ford's coil.

If you used the starter button to activate the ford relay you would have to run key on 12v constant to coil and insulate the relay body/mount from ground, then run the wire from the starter button to the relay body/mount to supply intermittent ground to the relay to complete the relay coil circuit. Power don't go thru the starter button ground does.

I went thru the same issue with my 2000 RS - replaced the starter - end of problem - I found a starter on ebay for $ 139 instead of $400 for a OEM - or have your starter rebuilt.

had a similar fault a while ago , pulled the switch apart and found several bits of dead insects in the contacts ! cleaned all up and problem sorted.
