Why do rear rotor bolts rust? 7 Months, 1 Week ago
Installing some used rotor bolts on the bike and can't figure out why they rust. My other bike (still can't get used to saying that) has the same issue. Those I polished when I polished the rear rotor and they are starting to rust too now. I keep the bikes indoors. Aren't they stainless lime the fronts, which don't seem to have this issue. Anyone have an idea?

The rear rotor bolts aren't stainless nor chrome plated. Hence rust unlike the fronts.

If you take a strong magnet to the front and rear you can feel quite a difference.

Why yami didn't use the same on the rear who knows, maybe because the front goes through the puddles first?

Both bolts in the front and rear or stainless I polished mine and there's no other material that will polish like stainless except for aluminum and they're definitely not aluminum. Granite the part numbers are different that could be because of the length

So why then do they rust up so easily and the fronts not? I was thinking that I would just shoot some clear coat on them after polishing the rust off. Maybe that will help some.

I've changed out every bolt in sight to allen head and most in chrome though some in stainless. Doesn't seem to matter, they rust. It has to be from washing it and living somewhat close to some water as mine sits inside 100% except when I'm traveling. And I avoid rain.

Here's my stab at this topic. Stainless rust is accelerated by high heat and fastened to dissimilar metals.
I believe the rotor bolts have a coating on the threads when new.
Just my 2 cents.
