What's your mileage like? Is the enricher closing all the way? How long are you leaving the enricher on? Is it starting correctly with the enricher, on cold starts.

Last time I hand calculated mileage was a hair under 50 which is the best I have ever gotten. I couldn't tell you if the enricher is closing all the way or not. I do bang it in just to make sure. It does start normal when cold using the enricher. I can usually tell when the bike is still cold if I turn the enricher off and I get a little hesitation in the throttle. I usually leave it on for about 8 miles.

I was going to buy an older Road* but after reading this kind of stuff over and over again with carbureted motors, I have decided to save for another month or two and buy a 2008 or newer FI model. I know there are plenty of carbureted Road*'s out there running great but why take the chance? Who needs the hassle?

Did you put in the grizzly needle when you did the pumpless mod? I had to adjust my float level again after the pumpless Mod as it was starving for fuel at higher speeds. After I adjusted the float level again is when I ran into the same problem you had.

If you will leave them alone you will not have the problems you hear about..... Most are self inflicted wounds! I have two, an 02 and a 99 they have been running for a few years without a problem. The 99 was jetted and tweaked got it done and left it alone. Have not touched the 02 it runs great, with no problems.. I have rode carbed bikes for many many years and have not had problems with them... Some folks stick their fingers where they don't belong!!

Shouldn't need the enricher on for 8 miles push it in after about 1 mile at most. I start mine with the enricher pulled out all they way after about 15 seconds it stumbles then I push it in about half way. I put on my helmet and vest and ride off. By the time I get about 1/2 mile down the road I push it all the way in and it runs fine. 8 miles you are carboning up the spark plugs.

That is half the fun! They run great if you don't touch them...They run better if you want to play around. The RoadStar is a great bike, yes even the "carb'd" models, right off the show room floor. Most of the stuff you find on this site is by guys that want to squeeze out that extra little bit and or modifying the bike as a hobby...Not just trying to keep it running. I bought my carb'd Roady because I didn't want a FI bike. If you don't want to make fuel system mods buy a FI or carb'd bike, if you want to tinker buy a Carb'd bike...either way you can not go wrong...but I can guarantee you one thing..leave now or get bit by the mod bug!

Yes my wounds are self inflicted and I have many haha. Getting schooled by the guru's here and learning my way around the bike can be fun and/or frustrating lol. My next bike will be an FI bike for sure. I want a Road or Stratoliner. I love that 1900 motor. My buddy has a Raider(Same motor I think) and he beats up on all of us. That thing is torque monster! Really wish I could find someone local with an AFR meter.

Ditto! What Agpilot said..

Go get a hammer and mash your thumb. That'll give you something to worry about, other then the scent of a little unburned fuel in the exhaust, that the AIS would have burned up. Nothing wrong with 50. As long as the enricher is not touching the rubber bumper it closes against, it should be fine. There is a tech article, about trimming the back of the enricher knob.
What are the temps like when your starting the bike and seeing smoke? Is it possible, its just condenstate vaporizing?

The inside of the exhaust, will always be black. You'd have to lean the carb way down to were it almost won't run right with the stock carb, to not have it black inside.

Yeah its not condensate for sure. I had looked at the tech article about trimming the knob down might have to look into that this weekend. Thanks for all the replies.
