Handlebar Cleanup 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Sorry to be flooding this forum with posts lately, but it's cleanup time on the roadstar and I'm fresh off a barnett clutch plate install which fixed my slipping issue, and a jockey shift install that's now exactly how I always wanted it.

Next up is my handlebars. I lowsided last season at about 40mph coming down a highway off ramp in the rain. Hit the white dotted line and lost control. The spill bent my 12" apes about an inch back on the right side. I've been riding with those bars for about a year now and I'm ready to replace them. Here's the details.

I found these bars which seem to be pretty similar to what I'm running now. Same rise. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHROME-APE-HANGERS-BARS-FAT-1-1-4-12-RISE-CHUBBY-FRISCO-HANDLEBARS-FIT-HARLEY-/252260923091

I'll have to measure my risers tonight to make sure the fitment is correct, but for the sake of argument let's assume they fit.

I want to clean up the bars completely. No switches at all at the grip portion. I was considering taking the left control unit (Headlight Hi/Low, Signals, Horn) and mounting it between the risers with the horn element connected to the starter instead. I never use my horn. I also never use my kill switch. This would in essence allow me to remove the right control unit as well, and still have my signals and starter available if I want to use them.

However, I'd need a new throttle assembly on the right handgrip. I'm running the stock carburetor, but with all the available throttle assemblies it's hard to know which will accommodate the cable housing. I'm sure the biltwell whiskey throttle does, but it's also $100 and that's a little steep. I would love to find a nice single cable assembly that fits 1" bars and isn't too ugly, if anyone has a recommendation please let me know. Here is an example of what I'd be looking to use http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-Single-Cable-Throttle-with-Jack-Hammer-Grips-Anderson-Grips-For-1-Bars-/151282240228?hash=item23391fcae4:g:TwQAAOxy4YdTUUIU&vxp=mtr

Thanks all!

Found about a billion of them on eBay Nick for under $20.00. There's even a trick one with internal throttle cable set-up, but that one is closer to $50.00. But if you want to clean up the bars, it might be worth it.

Haha you and I seem to be crossing threads quite a bit lately. Not a bad thing as I'm always glad to hear your suggestions. Do you mind linking the one you're talking about? Internal throttle would be pretty sweet, and I'd love to see those $20 ones as well. As I mentioned, it's just hard to know if it will work with my throttle cables. My fear is in ordering one and realizing it doesn't accept the ferule that the road star uses.

Ferrels can be changed if you have access to a soldering gun there's nothing to it. I can't provide the link, just go to ebay motorcycle parts and put 1" throttle assembly in the search engine, and you'll see what I saw.

Posting links is easy, just copy the address at the top of your browser:

I'll tell you about an idea I had a long time ago. I never have done it, or seen it done for that matter so it would be unique. On a bike with footboards (like ours), drill a hole in the left side board and install an automotive type early Chevy floor mounted dimmer switch for the hi-lo beams. Takes it off the handlebars and would be very trick. Might take some engineering to make it work but it's possible

Now that is kinda cool right there.

If I wasn't so intimidated by electrical bullshit I would try it on this bike. I would place it in the upper inside (closest to the bike) part of the boards. It would be out of the way for everyday riding but accessible when needed. All your old school types would know what is was immediately, younger guys who have never driven a car with a floor mounted dimmer switch wouldn't have a clue.

This is a very cool idea, but I must ask. Am I the only one who's highbeams do absolutely nothing? I remember fussing with them for a month straight trying little tweaks here and there and could never get them to be useful. The problem is that when the lo beam points to the appropriate place on the road, the hi beam is illuminating far too high up, and the road in front of my is invisible. Vice versa, if I move it down, the lo beam is too low and I need to keep the hi beam on all the time.

I'm going to cut that switch completely out. Worthless.

Tell you what I may do tho, is install one of those knobbie switches into my side cover just about where the jockey shifter sits. I'm usually shifting down before turns, so my hand is already there. A flick switch for blinkers in the same area might be the ticket. Will probably wait on that until after the Harley Rendezvous. If anybody is going to that, hit me up!
