Probably answered your own question.

Round peg in a square hole, sort of speak.

Maybe why the PO got rid of it.

I did not look closely at the pulley before. It is used and the teeth are flat on top not round like th e OEM pulley teeth. Th e flat teeth are very uniform but very flat.

Well this is just wierd. Is there some pulley design that has flat teeth for a road star? Is there something I am missing? It is the correct number of teeth and is the right diameter and definatley came off a road star cause th e PO sent it with the hub still attached to the pulley.

I think it is just a wear issue....teeth on the pulley are square...belt round? a little bit?

Re:Belt squealing noises 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Hey, I've been having the same problem with my bike for quite some time now. Took it to a shop and they confirmed that it was in fact the belt. Well, cleaned and greased up the rollers, then got some belt dressing and liberally sprayed both sides of the belt as well as the rear pulley then taking it for a mile ride then repeated the process, spraying again for a couple more times. Worked like a charm, hopefully it works for you too. Oh yeah, my belt has about an inch play, snug but not too tight
