Weird shifting issue 3 Years, 4 Months ago
I am having a weird shifting issue. When I shift into gear (anything except first) it seems to not go into gear. Happens sometimes and then sometimes not. So here is what happens: I take off in first and go t shift into second, third or whatever and let the clutch out and nothing. Pull in the clutch and push down the gear shift again a little harder, no change in resistance though, and it catches. It never pops out of gear just doesn't go into gear everytime. I have adjusted the shift linkage any number of ways and nothing changes the issue. It is a made worse of course when the linkage is adjusted to wide . So any ideas?

Throw out bearing. Though the parts fiche only calls it a bearing. it's in one of the pressure plates, can't recall if it's plate 1 or 2. And I'm too lazy to go to a parts fiche.

Recall was done years ago but don't know the exact time frame. Verified it at the dealer. I am the third owner. It has 41K miles on it but I don't have any knowledge on throw-out between Ng done ever. Have the nickels worth at the handle.

Curt, Erbman, is that something you think I could handle myself? I'd say I have average to better than average mechanical skills. Example: installed my starter, clutch master cylinder and slave, steering gear box all on.my jeep. Also did all my jetting work on my bike as well as the replacing the wires, coils etc. What do you think?

It won't affect the slack at handle. I went thru 2, both time different symptoms.
1st time sounded like crunching marbles, and extremely difficult to shift into neutral either from 1st or 2nd gear. 2nd time, hard to explain, but with extremely light pressure on lever, could feel a abnormal vibration thru it and a very soft light tinking noise. Tech said it was lever adj. Brought it back a few days later and told him to just listen to what I say and change it, come back out after done, and says "yup, you were right" I said I told ya that 3 days ago. He just didn't think the labor was necessary and save me the hr labor charge.

I'd soak the shift pedal shaft with some penetrating oil before I dug into the throw out bearing.
Might get lucky.
