My next battery will be an OEM Yuasa. I used the first one from 07 til 2013 and it never failed I just replaced it because it was old and didn't want to find out just how long it would last.
You probably already know this but powersports Motorcross battery is the same as OEM Yuasa, just different lable. Made in the same USA factory in Philly.
I bought Powersports Motorcross 310 CCA for $89. Fingers crossed

http://www.batterystuff.com/blog/motocross-vs-yuasa-which-is-the-better-motorcycle-battery-.html
First, let's look at Yuasa:

Yuasa (pronounced "You-Aw-Sah" is almost a household name when it comes to motorcycle batteries. Since 1979, Yuasa has been manufacturing OEM Batteries in the USA for new motorcycles, ATVs, and other power sports applications. Although Yuasa has factories in Japan and Taiwan, they manufacture their large capacity powersports batteries in Laureldale, Pennsylvania. They offer a wide selection of both conventional wet-cel and sealed AGM batteries. These are good batteries, hands down.

So, what about Motocross?

Believe it or not, Motocross is manufactured in the same factory, the same assembly process, at the same time as the Yuasa. The only difference is the label applied at the end of the manufacturing process. Motocross came about as a way for Yuasa to enter the ever growing aftermarket, without disrupting their already established brick and mortar new bike dealerships. This allows them access to a much broader market share, at a much more reasonable price point.

So, basically, when you buy a Motorcross replacement battery, you're really getting a Yuasa.

There you have it. This round of Versus is really about shedding some light on a common misconception. Motorcross is not better than Yuasa when it comes to performance. They are just as good. However, they are the winners when it comes to a better deal. Buying a replacement battery from Yuasa will typically be marked up in price because they sell directly to bike manufacturers. But the Motocross is marketed as the affordable alternative replacement battery.

======================

To add to that Deka/Easternpenn battery mfg has been in battery mfg biz since 1955 so they have just as much or more exprience in the battery mfg biz as yuasa does with both mfgs having a good rep.

Deka has such a good engineering rep when it comes to batteries that the federal government is investing in East Penn, which has 90 warehouses across America and facilities that make battery accessories, wire and cable.

East Penn's reputation for innovation and environmental friendliness, landed it a $32.5 million U.S. Department of Energy grant in August to develop new battery technology for electric hybrid vehicles.

Also, the 500 & 375cca mant free agm factory activated batteries i posted on here in fact mfg in the USA per main mfg website so they are not mfg in china that can be questionable at times.

I have been wrenching bikes cars for over 4 decades and know 1st hand deka bike car batteries are a good quality reliable battery just as good as Yuasa.

In over 4 decades 1st hand exp installing new batteries in bikes and cars have i run into a few Yuasa & Deka batteries that were either defective when bought new and or expired before they should have in both cases .

And Yuasa that many people use as a benchmark isnt perfect either because have had them fail on me personally leaving me stranded a couple times not to mention people brining bikes to me to work on that wont start with dead/defective yuasa batteries that wee only 1-1.5 yrs old with a bad cell etc.

But in the long run i have found both mfgs (yuasa & deka) to be approx = when talking quality with the deka agm maint free 310cca bike battery being 1 of if not the best value for money spent ($89)vs srv'c life with yuasa's factory activated mant free agm 310cca battery costing on avg $30-35+ more for not any better perf or srvc life oin avg for more money.

But time will tell how these 375 & 500cca batteries i posted on work out when it comes to quality & srvc life.

Now if those batteries work out to be good & reliable with long srvc life (at least 4-5yrs) they would also be great replacement batteries for the R* when it comes to cost vs starting power & srv'c life.

12 Volt 20 Ah Sealed AGM 500cca Lightning Start Battery for Yamaha 2006 Road Star XV 1700 Spoke Wheels XV17AVC Motorcycle replaces oem 4SH-82100-22-00, BTY-YTX20-LB-S0, YTX20L-BS. Maintenance-Free. Item 01-352P
Sealed AGM Maintenance-Free

$99.90

Does anyone have any actually experience with one of these batteries?

I don't know how they can get the much power out of the same size battery. Yuasa and others haven't been able to do it. I do know that ratings need to be looked at closely, all CCA's are not created equal. There are two parts to the rating, the Cold Cranking Amps, and the amount of time it can put out that current. There is a standard, but some companies were known to measure CCA peak for a 1/1000 of a second...

Would I buy one? Probably not. Just because chances are it's made in China and the last battery I bought made in China was the Scorpian and that POS lasted about 8 months before it went toes up... Do I really believe it's 500 CCA? Hell no

=========================

MFG main/home website states they are mfg in USA.

scott

The manufacturing home page states the Antigravity lithium battery is made in USA. Nothing is mentioned about the Lightning Start AGM battery.

I sent an email to Powersource Battery and asked them if the Lightning Start 550CCA was made in the USA.
My reply from the company was "NOT MADE IN US"

AH,thanks for clearing that up.

A fellow RSC member posted this (pasted below) which initally made us/me think that battery was actually mfg in the USA :

(I don't know never heard of that brand ,I always say you get what you pay for, but I may be wrong just looked them up made in the USA)

======================================================================================

Well i just went to that link thats the mfg of the lightning start battery and on the front page it opens to it does in fact state they mfg motorcycle batteries in the USA like was posted by another RSC member that i had pasted above.

But when you read closer/further they are reffering to thier Lith-ion series of batteries being mfg in USA & not the lightning start series battery.

I looked all over thier site for info on where the lightening series batteries are mfg and found nothing.

Well i guess we wont know how good the lightning start battery really is untill a few people buy & try them along with getting a few yrs under thier belts running them too.

But with the 500cca/20ah lightning start maint free battery being only $99.90 inc S&H and the 375cca maint free AGM battery being $89 i'd be willing to give either of them a try.

So it has been almost a year since this post thread ended and I am wondering if anyone has any feedback on the Lightening Start 500 CCA battery? I am looking to buy a battery and want to know if anyone has any experience that they would like to share?

My first job was in a motorcycle shop.
Honda dealership .1967

The batteries that came in the Honda was Yuasa.
They were revolutionary in that the case was transparent.
Not transluscent,.....transparent clear!

You could see the insides of the battery and see if the plates
were damaged or sulfates had risen to the bottom of the plates shorting them out.

No feedback on the 500cca batt, but any of the batts in links i pasted below and your getting a good deal on a hi perf fact activated hi perf agm high out 310cca battery.

I have been using these batteries in my bikes and other peoples bikes i work on for many yrs with great results and long srvc life as along as bikes charging systems working properly or isnt being oebr worked with more elec add on accessories then charging system can support.

And with R*'s older then 04 with lower output 21amp stator that can be a problem for sure.

I only use Interstate batteries for both of my vehicles and the bike. Have an Interstate now and it is probably 3-4 years old or more not sure, paperwork is on the bike but it is under cover for the winter. Will check tomorrow to be sure. Never had a problem with and Interstate battery, have been using them for years.

I used to be an interstate battery fan too but not anymore .

I bought a brand new interstate battery for my mothers maxima and 9 month later a cell crapped out, checked alt, charging ok so had it replaced under warantee & said to myself nobody is perfect and forgot about it.

Well my next exp with an intersted batt was less then a yr later on a bike/honda shadow 1100 i was working on for a friend because he bought a brand new interstate battery for it and had me install it along checking charging system which was ok along with also doing an oil change, tune up etc.

Well guess what, that new inertstate battery crapped out in approx 6 months ,but he lost the receipt so i got him a better quality Deka power sport maint free agm motorcycle battery for his 1100 shadow.

Soon after installing the new deka battery he told me his bike's motor never spun over as fast as with the new deka battery being like as if the spark plugs were out of it and the motor started much quicker then it ever has when cold or hot too.

So that's 1 person/me having 2 out of 2 interstate batteries defective both crapping out on less then 1 yr post installing them for a 100% fail rate.

Again,nobody/no mfg is perfect but having 2 brand new interstate batteries in a row go belly up in less then 1 yr tells me Interstates quality isnt there anymore and not to ever waste my time buying any more interstate batteries.

My friend said the box for the interstate battery in his honda shadow 1100 said it was mfg'd in i believe it was Mexico or someplace not on Us soil.

If i am not mistaken the Deka power sport bike batteries are still mfg'd on Us soil i believe someplace in PA.
