I pledge $250
The clock is ticking
Of no value I stand back
a spectator
About to witness a tragedy
There is nothing I can do
but watch
The clock is ticking. The RSC as we know it, and it’s priceless history are about to go dark.
Its past is what brought us here and made the RSC great.
I know the RSC community will continue on in some form or another and I’ll be there (structure and subscriptions are tomorrow’s topic), that’s somewhat comforting. While there is value in moving forward, the past is what brought us here. I get the challenge is huge and the required resources are far beyond most of our understanding. Admittedly I take for granted what is required behind the page to make any of this function, because it always does.
Like most here, I’m clueless how any of this works. So our vast majority add no value to the solution of retaining what’s about to be lost. A sincere thank you to those seeking possible solutions.
~wipe tear, open beer
$250 is a fraction of the value I have received from the RSC.
Seriously, you can’t put a figure on the value this site has been to so many!
Yes the site activity is a fraction of a few years ago, evolution has its peaks and valleys.
Imagine if the end was announced 4 years ago. Passing the hat to support a solution.... we’d needed a larger hat and there would have been change left over!
Unnecessarily long but I’ve had beers, had a thought and sadly have time to kill this evening.
The RSC clock is ticking....
My only contribution starts with an idea, and a pledge, if our community thinks it worthy, and someone takes on the task.
As sad as it is I understand why the RSC, as we know it, has to go. Progress. Our founders have created something beyond compare here and the archival snapshot the foundation. Gram has contributed more then we can ever imagine and has been so generous to have given so much of himself to sustain the RSC site. Yes it will be reborn, but without the past it’s future value is marginal. Sure topic will be revisited and new ideas will surface. The wealth of technical information thats been created by so many of our predecessors over the years... and shared around the world... can never be replaced. All but a few of the pioneers have moved on. So many years of discovery, creativity, collaboration, risk taking, documenting... all just about gone.
I’ll remember a few of the thousands of contributors contributions made in the thousands of threads, and tech articles....
So many of which have provided me knowledge, ability, confidence, comradery....
$250.00. For those who don’t know me, come to Eureka Springs, it’s a blast!!! ~beer Me... I am cheap and I have been cash poor for years, that said I pledge $250 (I wish I had more) towards a fund for saving the past. Realistically I’ve saved multiples of that figure while following the RSC and utilizing its many resources, from members (past and present) knowledge and contributions, a guide to confidently performing my own maintenance, not to mention a few repairs too.
Again my only contribution starts with an idea
and if our community thinks it worthy
and someone takes on the task
I’ll drop in my seed....
and challenge others that appreciate the value of our past to gamble with me....
******
Can something like a go-fund-me type page be set up? Some place I (and others) can make a contribution so we can see the combined value of our members contributions. Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t question anyone’s intentions, but like our past, if you can’t see it it has no value. However, if you can see my $250 then there is a hard number to work with.
The gamble...
Hold my $250, this is not extra cash I have so I am taking a risk by stretching beyond my means on an if of a sure thing. ~beer If it’s needed to make the difference then I win the pot, information that will continue to pay out in spades for years to come.
I understand that all contributions combined may not be enough to make a difference, but if we (not me, but those who can work the problem) can see the total of contributed funds then we know the $number$ available to work with.
So, in the event that our past can be saved, and there is a cost to the solution. Cash it out as necessary to cover that cost.
***However, if no solution is to be had, funds are returned to the contributor (less necessary fees?)... or what percentage was contributed of what remains, or something like that. ~beer
Earlier I did tell you I was cheap.
So to be clear... I can’t afford to pay $250 for the effort without the reward. But I can put it in the kitty now so we know what there is to work with. If it’s not used in 2,3,6? months it’s returned.
Maybe this was/is stupid thought....
But it sucks knowing that I add no value to a solution....
Yes I’m cheap, pretty poor, sometimes stingy, but I’ve got nothing else to offer.
If you’ve been with us awhile take some time and browse the site. I had forgotten just how much is out there.
No pressure but the RSC countdown has began.
We understand we can only do what we can do...
Is our past worth anything to you today?
It’s obviously worth much more to me then I have available, but I’ve checked the sofa, under my cage seats and in the sock drawer. I’ve scrounged up $250 today.
How much $$ do you have available today to save our past?
To all those who would happily purchase a disk of information but hadn’t spoke up (yep that’s me too), add that amount to your pledge and make a risk free deposit in our future.
In a week we can have a starting number.
If nothing comes from my long winded gasp for hope that’s ok. I’ve now contributed something, if nothing more then late night ramblings.
Furthermore,
I truly appreciate the efforts of those with the resources (time, talent, gumption, support, $$ etc) to seek a solution.
Additionally,
If necessary, I’ll proudly make the next evolution of our RSC site the first site to get a monthly subscription from me.
Lastly,
Please don’t scold me for drinking on a Saturday night as I contemplate loosing my RSC, or my grammar, spelling, rambling thoughts, incomplete sentences, or for drinking alone on a Saturday night.
