HD SAE 20W50 Oil in my Roadie??? 8 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Good Day Folks
Got a quick question:
Can I run Harley Davidson's SAE 20W50 oil in my '06 Roadstar 1700?
A buddy of mine has a few new jugs kicking around and offered my some cheap.
Cant seem to find any info if this oil is compatible with these bikes. Any help or
info would be appreciated.
Thanks Gord.

Look for the JASO or JASO MA2 certification on the container. If it's there then it's ok for our wet clutch.

Last time I checked, Mobile 1 doesn't have the MA2 rating anymore. But my Castrol and Valvoline V Twin does

The Mobil 1 4T 10W40 has it, but they claim both (20w50 VTwin) are safe for wet clutches.

Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 and Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 engine oils are designed to help provide the proper frictional characteristics necessary for wet-clutch common engine/transmission systems.

The MA2 is for bikes with wet clutches and catalytic converters like our FI bikes. The MA or MA1 is fine for our carbureted bikes but there is also a MB rating that's for bikes that use separate oils for the engine, transmission and clutch like Harley for instance. I don't know but Harley might use engine oil in the primary now.

MA2 also delivers the highest friction performance.

I'm gonna stick with the Mobil 1 VTWIN, I tried the merc quicksilver and had bad clutch slipping, went back to mobil and problem went away! Just a little food for thought...

Just a little food for thought...Been having clutch slip at higher RPM hard throttle and was thinking clutch spring needed replacement. I have been running Quicksilver for about 9000 miles now. I wonder if this slipping is simply an oil change ? Or should I stop putting Marvel Oil in my oil. I have always exchanged one pint of MMO for one pint of regular oil.

Time for an experiment. Ditch the Quicksilver, and go back to Mobil1 or Amzoil 20-50.

You can easily simply wait until a couple hundred miles before your oil change to add the MMO. That way the cleaning still works, and you don't have to worry about any effect it might have on the clutch.
