exhaust popping 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Picked up an '08 Road Star S and it looks like the previous owner did a Stage 3 mod on the exhaust. It sounds great, but when I decelerate it pops a little and almost always pops when I pull the clutch when shifting. I've read removing the AIS will solve this issue, but I can only find this mod for carb'd Road Stars. Mine being an '08 it has FI. So does anyone have any info on how to take the AIS off a FI model? Will I get a FI light if I do this? And will it mess with my ratios or will the O2 sensors fix that for me?

Take it off, you'll be okay.
We have a number of members who have done it already, with no problems.
Same procedure as the carbed bikes, except your AIS is controlled by the computer, instead of engine vacuum, so no cap to install on the intake manifold.

Mine's off on my 2008. Made no difference except the popping is gone and looks better. Plugs appear OK.

I've removed my AIS as well (08), if I recall correctly, the only difference was I had something I did under the tank.. been awhile now, I'd have to go look again. It will solve your popping issue, though, and the hardware to add/remove is the same (plug plates/AIS unit)

It is not much different than the 04-07 models. Put the block off plates in the heads, unplug the electrical connection and remove all the junk. It will not cause any problems with the FI system.

Hi SKw,
Have you got a thread to that AIS? I drilled out the back plate and pulled that end pipe out the exhaust(not sure what stage that is) because the drilled holes in the back plate gave the exhaust a horrible fluffing sound. Now the bike pops like a gunshot on deceleration and low down throttle response is not great. When pulling away there is lag and it feels slightly jerky. What am I doing wrong here? Little worried I have messed with the back pressure. Bike is a carbed 06 Midnight*.

AIS is mounted on the front of the motor, not in the pipes. I'm pretty sure there should be a writeup somewhere on the clinic here? I'll see if I can find one.

That'll give you an idea of what you're up against, I got my kit from Night Sky Customs (I think they're called?) off eBay, but you can google and find one. All you really need are caps for the ports and then remove the AIS unit. Cleans up the front end a bit. Good luck with it!

Awesome! That is exactly what I needed! I looked over the bike and found everything that needs to be taken off. The caps look easy enough to fabricate myself. Plan on doing this tonight or tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing the difference, but it's been raining here so can't go for a ride yet

Thanks everyone
