My bike ( 99 R* ) has started to make a strange noise during decel (only when engine braking under load.) It sounds sort of like metal rubbing. Not real loud but enough that it can be heard over the engine noise. If I pull in the clutch and brake /coast I do not hear the noise.
I think it may be my clutch getting ready to go, but would prefer to hear from those more knowledgeable than me (which is probably most of you) on this subject.
Ideas, thoughts, troubleshooting tips? |

Shores, thanks for the thought.
Not trying to argue the point, but I pulled the cover and checked for any looseness. I also flattened the two tabs on the washer, and then used the 36mm to hammer the pulley with a small sledge and checked for any looseness in the nut, none. I tested with a 70 Lb torque wrench and it clicked. I didn't want to risk a remove and replace (I have just ordered a new nut and washer) without new parts to put back. I intend to replace them anyway when the parts come in.
Like I said, I may be wrong but it does not seem the front pulley is the problem. Can anyone think of any other test I can do to isolate the noise? Just because I think it cant be the pulley does not mean im right.

Did you lube the two white rollers inside the front pulley cover?

I didn't know I should. I did check to see that they turned, but didn't hear any noise. I'll lube them when I replace the nut and washer.

Have you checked the transfer case for oil?
The chain and bearings can pretty sloppy in there if starved for lube.
I’ve seen photos where the hyvo chain was slapping the case.

TC oil level was fine. When I checked my belt tension it was WAY loose, over an inch! I also found my rear axle nut to be loose. I could spin the axle with a wrench. I have no idea why it was so bad, as I had torqued them when I replaced my spoke wheels about 6 months ago (and adjusted the belt.) I'm going to have to keep a close eye on those for awhile.
I don't know for sure if that fixed the noise issue yet, as I has to clean the front pulley area and waiting for it to dry.
I'm going to lube the spinners in there before putting it back together.

Make sure the axle isn't seized in the bearing. There have been a few here that have had that problem and it will loosen the axle to the point of the nut falling off. If you loosen the axle nut and can move the axle in/out like you were gonna remove it and it isn't stuck in the bearing you should be OK. Tighten it all back down and keep an eye on it.

Noise is gone, so I guess it was the belt tension / white roller issue making the noise. Readjusted and re-torqued the rear axle.
Dave, the axle seems to be free, but i painted witness lines on both sides just to keep an eye on it. Thanks for the idea.
