#1025975 Questcap (User) Platinum Boarder Posts: 7727 Rear Brake Calipers 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago   Hey, I'm in need of rebuilding or replacing a rear brake caliper on an '01. The rear looks to have 4 pistons in it, and 2 are badly seized. I went on eBay to shop for a good used replacement, and the lowest cost rear was said to be from an '05... But, it only had 1 large piston, not 4. Did Yamamama put a different rear caliper on later model Road Stars? And, like so much other stuff, if they did, is it a direct, bolt-on replacement for my older 4-piston rear caliper? If you look in the Yamaha Roadstar parts fiche there is not an optional 1 piston caliper for the rear of our bikes. They only used 4 piston calipers. No I'm not saying it is a bolt on. The Vstars still use the sliding caliper setup. The rear on all of the Road Stars is the same as the front on the 04's and up. The one pad on the sliding caliper isn't necessarily static, the caliper moves with the pistons so that both pads are applied equally. May not have been any great bargain, but my bike is an '01, and a new Yami rotor, the way I use the rear brakes, ought to last the rest of my riding days... so, for me, I see it as a smart value! The caliper is here... and, lo, and behold, it had what looked to be a set of brand new pads in it! The bike's now inside, and ready to be torn down... I'm pretty sure I have a braided stainless hose I can put on now, too! Time to squeeze the pistons, and make sure they move easily....   Logged     Sig Pic deleted - larger than 450 pixels and 50 kb   The administrator has disabled public write access. #1026461 Questcap (User) Platinum Boarder Posts: 7727 Re:Rear Brake Calipers 2 Months, 1 Week ago   Hey guys, this morning, I replaced the rear rotor on the aluminum wheel with a factory new one,... and the used caliper off eBay, which had new pads in it, had easily moving pistons! Yeah!!! Plus, I did find a braided SS rear brake line from Russell, but in Yami packaging, and so that's now in place. The wheel is mounted, and I've had to leave the rest for later... can't ride 'til April anyway, but it is SO nice to have a finished heated basement in which to work on 'em in the winter time! Since I have the exhaust off, my next dilemma is whether I want to put the same back on, or replace that with some other....
