hay carb masters 9 Months, 1 Week ago
I am getting rid of my kuryakyn hypercharger and putting on a K&N. (04 - 1700)
Davej says to run a 172.5 main and a 40 pilot. I trust him, so i'm ok with his advice on that.
I pulled off my carb today, The main jet had no number, I had a 172.5 main which looked much smaller than the no number one I took out. Hypercharger instructions http://www.kuryakyn.com/documents/installation/9420-23MC-1011.pdf called for a 182.5 so i'm guessing that is what it was.
pilot was a 35 and the only other one I have is also a 35.
someone mentioned on another thread to check the air jet, and set it back to stock, is this the one in the top of the carb. (# 2 in picture http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/2004-yamaha-road-star-midnight-xv17ams/o/m145523#sch299904 ) stock calls for a 2.0 air jet. mine had no markings on it so i'm going to replace it with a 2.0 just to be sure.
my needle has one clip on it.

so, I need a needle, 40 pilot, and a 2.0 air jet.
I plan to stop by the dealers to get the pilot and air jet this weekend.
is there anyplace that I can buy just a 4 clip needle? (maybe the jets too) I know one comes in the barons kit and i'll buy one if I need to. It is hard to justify spending $55 for the kit when I need out of it is the needle.

is there anything else that I need to be looking at to make this switch?

Age old problem Cike. The one part that everyone *needs* is the one you can't buy as a stand alone...unless that has changed recently.
Maybe a member might have an adjustable needle he would part with.

Wrong kinda needle. He needs a Jet Needle. Not the fuel inlet valve.

You can't buy an adjustable needle without buying the whole kit. Now I learned a little trick from Mrshamrock where he modified a stock needle to the same taper and diameter as a Barons needle. The stock needle groove is the same as the 4th groove on a Barons needle. I made a couple of them and I think I only used 1 of them so I might have one if you would like to try it. It worked perfectly on the bike I used the other one on and I think Allen has modded quite a few of them. If you want me to look for it and send it to you just let me know.

If you still have one, and don't need it, that would be great. Just let me know what you want for it. If not I'll buy the kit.
Seems like people are always looking for parts they can make and sell for the road stars. Sounds like this might be something fairly easy and cheap to make.

At one point Shamrock said he wasn't up to selling them, but I'm not so sure he's not dropping them into his inventory bikes he sells. Speculation on my part, but I know he's tested them well.
