Throttle being touchy .... 1 Year, 3 Months ago
Recently my throttle does not feather well going from off to lightly on at cruise speed. It's kind of abrupt when it does take hold, but not a clunk etc as in a pulley clunk. Anybody experience this? My first thought was to check the throttle linkage and butterfly, which I did and they are fine & move freely. The manifold does have some decent size rubbercracks but so far the idle is normal and hasn't changed, so I think the cracks are not all the way thru yet. Should I be thinking about a carb rebuild and fix those cracks while I'm in there, or is there something else I should be considering that I'm not.. that could cause the abrupt response.

Just an idea, maybe the carbie pump is not squirting fuel as it should, you can check this by removing the air cleaner and twisting the throttle and see if it pumps, it only needs to pump for the first 1/4" of throttle movement, any more than this is just waste of fuel, the other might be the primary jet could be partly blocked and cant deliver enough fuel when the throttle is opened, I covered my manifold in silastic sealer

+1 make sure they are lubed properly and free from anything else around them then go from there. It may be something real simple.

If its still the stock jetting, and a 1700, you can easily go to a 40 Mikuni Pilot. The stock 35's, are a bit anemic even in the 1600's, when opening the intake and exhaust.

Thanks for the info about using silastic sealer Aussie. Yeah the squirrty pump is shooting out just fine. It's a 1600.. with a stock Mikuni. Don't know what jetting it has tho because I purchased the bike from a relative of the deceased owner, with no info. I've had to discover things as I go. Think I will just ride it like it is for now eventually pull the carb and go thru it for jetting etc, and when I do upgrade to an aluminum ported manifold.

Good luck finding one of those. And if you do... even better luck getting it to seal properly.

Haven't looked into manifold options yet but I see what you're saying. Looks like they have alum ones for Harleys which appear to use a better style port seal. hmmm an alum manifold with rubber transitions to the R* head might be a good aftermarket opportunity for someone.
