Just the pistons pushing back down when it stops on partial compression. Normal noise. My XS650, with the 360 degree twin (both pistons rise and fall together) makes a groaning noise when it does it.

Did the sound resemble something you would hear when turning the burners off on a gas grill?

Mine was making a sound similar to that when I was dialing in my idle and had it a little high.

May be a little off on your jetting but nothing to worry about. I would bet you don't have many miles on the bike yet and it tends to go away after you get more miles on the bike. It is caused by the piston not completing the compression stroke and it has unburned gas in the cylinder and exhaust pipe so the piston starts back down from the gas pressure. You can get ba poof sound if the gas vapors light off from the heat in the pipes and cylinder. Lind of like trying to run backwards.

When mine kicks back on a compression stroke after shut down it engages the one way bearing in the starter clutch and spins the starter backwards for a sec.

Doesn't hurt any thing.

Yeah, I think mine does the same thing about 30% of the time....it's actually pretty funny sounding, like a cartoon ricochet sound It's made for some funny arrivals when taking a break on family road trips: "here comes Mike on the Yamaha roaring in, parks next to Eric's Road King, patutty pattuty, click, putter, putt, put, put, basiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnggggggggg." "I'm here!!!"

Been doing it for most of my 26,500 miles, so I'm not going to sweat it.

Mine has 53K, and it does the starter kick back thing almost every time I shut it down. I have had other bikes that did the same thing, it's no big deal.
