Fuel guage being naughty 7 Months, 1 Week ago
Lately my fuel gauge has been inaccurate. The past few fill-ups even after riding a while only comes up to a little over the 3/4 mark. Not that I absolutely need it because I can always track my fuel by the odometer, but a gauge is nice to have when it works right.

Should I be checking for bad connections, grounds, voltage drops etc, or does this typically mean some fuel level component is failing?

Most likely the sending unit. Fuel contains sulfides which attacks the silver on the sending unit board that the sweep arm connected to the float makes contact with.

I've had good luck using Cheveron Techron Plus Concentrate additive that supposedly keeps that crap from building up.

Easy enough to pull It from the tank and check the sending unit.

Thanks Ron. It looks like the board surface is right up there in the fuel. nice. At least it will be easy to inspect after removal.

Anyone have success cleaning the junk off the board? Would the Techron Plus work at this stage to clean it with once out of the tank or is there some other cleaner that's better for this?

To me, it sounds more like your float is binding. See how freely it moves once you get it out.

Pencil erasers are great for cleaning solder connections.

I'll try that. During my 30 mile ride to work today the needle went 3/4 then 1/2 then back to 3/4, so you could be right about the binding. thanks

Once you get it out you'll see just how delicate that sending unit is.

Nice pics of the sending unit removal, thank you.

It sure looks delicate like you said.

I'll post back on the results of cleaning it and retrying it.
