Timing, no matter what RPM is being monitored by the ECM, is crucial for different throttle applications.

Without TPS, how's anything going to know whether the throttle is cracked, wide open, or anything in between.

Timing will default to WOT timing for the curve it is set in.

Dave is 100% correct. You can change the timing curve with a Dyna3000 if your TPS is still hooked up and functional. It just won't give you a code with the Dyna3000 if your TPS is unhooked (still reverts to WOT timing though). I did the TPS mod after a few thousand miles when I had my 1600 and an HSR 42 carb (along with ported manifold, BAK, pipes, etc). Maybe it makes a slight difference but it was hard to tell for me personally (bike is so underpowered for my liking). However, I would always do the TPS mod if running the HSR carb. It's just the right way to do things.

So no, the Dyna does not override the TPS. It simply won't give you an error code if you have a Dyna3000 and don't have the TPS hooked up properly. It will, in that case, revert to WOT ignition timing though

Hi Smokescreen- I just off the phone with the Partsfish and it's been delayed until later next week- I'd gladly pay shipping and whatever you want for yours- I can money transfer ahead of time? Mine is a 1999- should it run ok without a TPS? unplugged it doesn't idle very well- yet plugged in idles fine- just sputters when I crack the throttle from closed to wide open- gradual increase isn't too bad.... except no engine flashing code- I verified my TPS has infinite resistance between one of the legs and ground- but am I missing something else? I'm dying to ride and extremely frustrated- this bike has spent more time in the garage than on the street- I'm also trying to find info on the TPS delete but can't seem to find a complete article etc on it

I've heard about this- pump works good- already checked - went thru the whole fuel system in depth- however do you have a link to that mod wouldn't mind getting rid of all the electronics possible not needed including pump

Re:TPS 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Just finished reading all the comments- thank you. To answer the above questions- fuel pump checked and good, whole fuel system drained and cleaned including carb. Replaced battery, plugs, coils, CDI, pickup, stator and voltage regulator, wiring harness. ignition key is a bit sticky, however this to me would an on/off scenario can't see it causing this issue. Battey connections confirmed clean and good. Charges at 14.2 volts at idle. The only things left are kick stand switch and kill switch ... however it does it in neutral too - so that should outrule the kickstand switch. I've got a TPS on back order- and mine verified faulty on the yellow to black resistance test (infinite). I'm hearing people ride with it disconnected- barely notice a difference- if this is the case, I may have a further issue- however I do agree without a TPS how does the CDI know how to adjust timing accordingly - however WOT should be more advanced than anything which I wouldn't think would cause it to hesistate.... looking for a TSP delete article or a TPS fix while I wait for my part. Thank you for all your help.

No sir. @ wide open throttle the ECM, taking notes from the TPS, retards the timing. By how much depends on the RPM.

Remember the old vacuum advance distributor on cars? Floor it and the manifold vacuum would drop off feeding the hose to the diaphragm on the side of the distributor and a spring would retard the timing. Let off and vacuum would return and suck the thing back, over riding the spring, to advance the timing.

Spring loaded, mechanical weights in the distributor would take care of monitoring the engine RPMs to add more spark advance.

a voes will work relatively well in lieu of the tps.It is only an on/off switch so not as accurate as the tps.I used one for years before adding a tps to my hsr carb....

I rode my 02 on vacation last year to Celina, OH for the Meet and Greet with the tps disconnected. Just under 4000 miles round trip. Disconnect your TPS and run the bike, if you still have the issues its NOT the TPS. If it clears up you found it.
I cannot describe the difference between running it with and running it without the TPS but it does run a bit differently, just not anything to worry about. All you are hurting at this point by not trying that is your riding time.

Re:TPS 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Thanks Rod- I disconnected it- it idles, runs, revs out- but there if I crack the throttle it stutters and stumbles pretty solid unless I roll on the throttle slowly-

I did notice there is a vacuum hose that is called "vacuum chamber breather hose" that runs into the surge tank- What is meant by the surge tank? They don't have any diagrams in the manual for this- if there is a breather, this tells me it is just that- a breather an not requiring vacuum is this correct?

The bike was running fine, all the sudden it started this- the only thing I keep resorting back to is carburation or TPS is causing this (and I know the part is faulty) but it seems everyone else does not have this issue with TPS disconnected.

I retested all resistances including pickup coil, ignition coils, etc-

Can someone please direct me on this "vacuum chamber breather hose"- and where it should attach to? The port is about 1/4 " part of the aluminum housing (between the PVC hose on the top and the beige plastic cover below- I tried to attach a pict but its not letting me do that.

I think you may have hit on the actual source of your issue.
What you have been describing didn't sound like a TPS issue to me.
Sounded more like a vacuum issue.
Not saying your TPS isn't bad, just don't seem like what's causing the problem.

Re:TPS 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago
So I hooked that tube up- turns out it goes to the air filter housing- just a breather tube. No vacuum involved- It didn't change how it ran. The bike starts and rides fine with the TPS disconnected and everything else hooked up. Its only issue is from an idle when I crack the throttle , if I do it too fast/too much it backfires out the carb, and wants to stall out- if I roll on the throttle its fine.... does that sound like TPS? Or should I be looking for further issues still? I'm thinking I may have to take the carburetor back off and go thru it again- I know its not an electronic issue unless its timing related- your thoughts? TPS is still 10 days away- will go thru the carb again- is there a specific jet you suggest I replace that may cause this issue?
