My bike was making a clunking sound when pushing backwards, so I had a look at my pulley, sure thing, it was loose!

I am new on here for a couple of weeks and am learning. Since I just bought my RS about 3 weeks ago.
So I read this thread last night and took a look also at my clymer manuel to see some pics.
I opened my 2003 up today and got some good news and some not quite as good news when I checked the front drive nut.
With almost 30k miles mine was not loose thankfully nice and tight...so that is good news.
However the bend over tab that the clymer talks about and shows pics of is not bent up and the nut is half way in the middle of the tab as opposed to where the tab could be bent up along one of the flat sides.
I did not have any socket as big as I need anyway so I will get one and some of the lock stuff and go from there.
If it is torqued correctly and the nut is still half way in the middle I wonder if I can bend it up as good as possible at that position? All the more reason to use the lock stuff you talked about.

Should be 36mm on the socket. I think folks have probably bent the tab up, on one or both sides of a corner. I think there are two tabs on each washer, is one already bent up fine, and you haven't noticed it?

I thought there were two tabs too. As the pics showed but I only saw one.
I will check more closely for the other tab too. I will get the socket and go from there.

Mine was like that too. Just one tab bent over the nut when I found it. When I retorqued it back on with the loctite I just bent up the second tab and folded it over on both sides of the nut edge. No issues.

The new washer is designed with two tabs so that one tab can be bent wherever the nut is at it's torqued spec. both tabs cannot be used at the same time. my 2 bits worth. Jeff

Hi guys, I haven't checked mine yet but I was looking at this site http://www.stadiumyamaha.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=YAM#/Yamaha/ROAD_STAR_MIDNIGHT_SILVERADO_-_XV17ATMV_-_2006/MIDDLE_DRIVE_GEAR/XV17ATMV_(2006_MOTORCYCLE)/MIDDLE_DRIVE_GEAR_(XV17ATMV_-_2006) and it appears they did away with the lock washer on '06 and newer models and went with a conical spring washer. Is that suppose to be better? '05 and older have the locking washer.

I checked mine today (06) and it's nice and tight. Funny thing is there is no lock washer or tabs to fold over. It looks like theres a band or something on the threads and it has a couple detents in it. Another thing I noticed, on the pully was a small white dot with a blue dot in the center of that. Looks like some sort of reference mark. Oh, and I used a 30mm socket but it was slightly loose, maybe a 29mm would be better. Ride on!

1700cc you have the newer style nut and shaft and they seem to have fixed the problem with those. I wouldn't take it loose unless when you check it you see things have changed. Make you a reference mark on the shaft and nut so you know if it changed next time.
