[quote]The front Pulley Nut used to be thought of as a pre 06 Problem. I have an 07 and at 48K miles it came off at speed. I Thought the belt broke and pulled over right away saving my Spline and Jackshaft. I was lucky.

Thanks for the heads-up.
Just competed my 2004. I found the nut secured with the tab on the washer, everything looked good. However, when I put the socket on the nut to check the tightness I found it just over finger tight.
Removed the nut, cleaned everything including the threads. Used the red Loctite, reinstalled the washer and nut and torqued to specs. Now I am ready for bike week.

This just doesn't make any sense to me at all? I went to yamaha (dealer) and bought the new washer... the washer has "teeth" that mesh with the splines on the shaft. In order for the nut to turn or loosen, the ear on the washer literally has to be bent back in order to free the nut to do so? The only way that nut wouldn't be torqued and that washer ear to be bent over it, is if the nut was not torqued to spec before the washer ear was bent on it.. which makes no sense at all... the thing is, that washer can't move... here's the question: can the nut be loosened without bending the ear of the washer out of the way? I don't believe so.

Yes it can move if your speed is high enough and you cut the throttle or brake hard enough you place reverse torque on the pulley and the nut. This over time will cause the nut to back off because the washer wears and bends. The washer is thin sheet metal and will bend over time in the splines also I have seen the tabs that bend over become unbent from the nut moving. They changed the jackshaft, the nut and the way it is locked down some time in 2006 because of this problem. BTW this problem is even worse on rear wheels without the cush drive like mine.

I would guess Mother Yamaha. The previous original owner said the cover had never been off. I got the bike at 10,000, it now has 12,000. Go figure.

I got mine new 0 miles and the cover had never been off as well. Yet when I pulled mine off the nut had backed off about 1/8" and the washer was distorted on the inside spline ears and the one out side tab. I flattened all the ears re-torqued the nut with red Loctite and bent both ears flat on the nut.

Curt, you say that you bent "both ears" flat on the nut? the new washer that I got (OEM part #90215-26241) the tabs won't both bend flat on the nut at the same time. The tabs are designed to work wherever torque spec leaves the flat surface. If the flat surface doesn't line up with one tab, it will on the other. Not both. So, with that said, IF you managed to get both of the tabs folded flat on two of the nut surfaces, I have to wonder about the condition of that washer... (yes, this is the kind of conversations I get into when it's too cold to ride Picture please

You'll notice in the picture below, that one tab isn't being used.... and it can't be unless the nut is turned so that it lines up with the flat portion.

I could get that 1 tab folded over on 2 flats. Whats the problem?
