Just competed my 2004. I found the nut secured with the tab on the washer, everything looked good. However, when I put the socket on the nut to check the tightness I found it just over finger tight.
Removed the nut, cleaned everything including the threads. Used the red Loctite, reinstalled the washer and nut and torqued to specs. Now I am ready for bike week.




This just doesn't make any sense to me at all? I went to yamaha (dealer) and bought the new washer... the washer has "teeth" that mesh with the splines on the shaft. In order for the nut to turn or loosen, the ear on the washer literally has to be bent back in order to free the nut to do so? The only way that nut wouldn't be torqued and that washer ear to be bent over it, is if the nut was not torqued to spec before the washer ear was bent on it.. which makes no sense at all... the thing is, that washer can't move... here's the question: can the nut be loosened without bending the ear of the washer out of the way? I don't believe so.



Just to add to the "guessin game", I'mathinkn, that when it is torqued at the factory, there is a whole combination of things, that the torque is counting on to stay that way. Either through vibration, compression of a soft lock washer?? or ridges on the edge of something, or sumthin closer to gremlins, the nut is not so much allowed to back off on the threads, but gets loose because of a change from the back side of the nut in towards the bike, if that makes sense. The manual should recommend checking and re-torqueing after the first so many miles.

Ok, I felt ambitious today so I checked my front pulley for the first time since I have had the bike. I just got it over the winter. My question is, one of the cover bolts, if looking at the cover, it is the second one from the bottom when looking at the grouping on the front edge of the cover, had some milky looking oil on the threads when I removed it. I wiped it off and looked in the hole, it appears to be a dead hole. Am I correct on this? Nothing is leaking or appears to be, even when the bolt was removed and the hole open, nothing came out. I am hoping that for some reason the PO put a dab of oil on the bolt and rain water has mixed with it. Any ideas? Oh yeah, my pulley nut was tight and the washer tab was still bent tight against it on my '04 with 13,500k miles.

You are correct nothing to leak from any of those bolt holes. You are probably also correct about the PO putting oil on the threads of the bolt. Just clean it off and maybe put some anti seize on the bolt threads and tighten.

When you torque with oil on the threads the torque will be 10% tighter.

The answer is no because the socket will not fit on the nut with the tab in the way.
